  • Honolulu bus system changes removed the regular bus route for Kahauiki Village, forcing more than 500 residents to walk along dangerous sections of Nimitz Highway. The city is planning a new route for the village and Sand Island that could start in March.  Hawaii News Now
  • Tourism, law enforcement, and community groups met last Wednesday morning in Waikiki at the 8th annual Visitor Public Safety Conference hosted by the Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association to address tech safety and financial scams affecting visitors & locals.  Hawaii News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hawaii Pop Con 2026 draws thousands to Blaisdell Expo Hall this weekend as fans trade collectibles and meet artists behind films and comics - the event continues on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a cosplay contest at 4 p.m.  KITV
  • Hawaii Dim Sum & Seafood in Chinatown will offer Lunar New Year specials with dishes like jai with 18 vegetarian ingredients and gau in brown sugar and coconut flavors for good fortune. The restaurant is preparing set menus and private gatherings ahead of Feb. 17, the start of the Fire Horse year.  Hawaii News Now
  • Wheatus lead singer Brendan Brown will appear on HNN’s Sunrise this morning and the band will perform at Blue Note Waikiki tomorrow, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. with ticket prices ($45 premium, $35 Loge).  Hawaii News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hawaii State Department of Education announced that all public school students must complete a financial literacy requirement as part of a half-credit Personal Transition Plan (PTP) before graduation, starting with incoming freshmen in the Class of 2030 for the 2026-27 school year. Schools can choose various instructional approaches.  Hawaii Free Press
  • Scientists at Keck Observatory on Maunakea discovered a black hole in a nearby disk galaxy whose gases erupt across 20,000 light years. The findings presented Thursday at the American Astronomical Society meeting support theories that supermassive black holes can reshape their host galaxies and may signal similar effects at home.  Hawaii News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • USGS scientists observed intermittent lava overflow from Kilauea’s north and south vents overnight, with flows picking up at 5:12 a.m. and growing to 20-foot fountains by 7:30 a.m.; they warn episode 40 of the eruption may begin any time as they continue monitoring the volcano.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • Eurus Energy America plans a green hydrogen and solar project on a 100-acre lot (using 90 acres for a solar array) at Campbell Industrial Park to produce 500,000-800,000 kg of hydrogen and reduce fossil fuel imports. Construction will finish by the end of 2027 pending public hearings.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 7, 2025, state officers fined boater Konane Zager over $10,000 for using longline gear at three times the allowed limit (3.69 nautical miles instead of 1) near Kona and revoked his commercial marine license for one year, with funds allocated to the Commercial Fisheries Special Fund.  Hawaii News Now

  • Nanakuli lineman Richard (Keoki) Chun played in the Native All-American Game in Minneapolis last month and proudly shared his Hawaiian heritage as his Golden Hawks won the matchup. He said he plans to use the cultural exchange to guide his future coaching career.  Hawaii News Now
  • The Hawaii women’s basketball team nearly upset UC Irvine in a 50 to 47 game at Bren Events Center today + Hunter Hernandez led with 20 points to secure UC Irvine’s 14th consecutive home win as Hawaii now stands at 6 to 9.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
