  • Hawaii's Micro-Grant for Food Security Program offers over $2.2 million to support small-scale farmers and backyard gardeners — applications close Feb. 19 as the program aims to boost local food projects for the community.  KITV

  • Honolulu firefighters responded to a two-story home fire in Kaneohe on Puuloko Place this morning & extinguished the flames by 8:40 a.m. with no residents home as they begin investigating the cause.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

  • Ka Pā Hula Hawaii holds the fashion show 'Welo o Ka Ua: An Evolution of the 'Ahu'ula' Saturday, Jan. 24, 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Pa’i Arts and Cultural Center in Kakaako to fund the hālau’s return to Merrie Monarch Festival in April.  Hawaii News Now

  • Today at 12:30 p.m., Annalisa Burgos hosts a livestream as Hawaii Appleseed launches its new Economic Justice Data Dashboard (which maps data like SNAP participation and cost-burdened renters by legislative district) to reveal community disparities and guide targeted policy decisions.  Hawaii News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A rehabilitated Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle nicknamed Hunter was released back into the ocean in Ko Olina on Tuesday after being rescued with fishing line entangling its flipper+ marine experts cleared the honu at HMAR Care Center following weeks of treatment.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Jan. 20, Panos Prevedouros explained that Hawaii can lower traffic fatalities by paying more attention to vulnerable road users (pedestrians, motorcyclists, bikers, and construction workers) instead of focusing solely on drivers; his analysis noted that Oahu’s driver metrics, such as congestion and ownership costs, are above average.  Hawaii Free Press
  • The Navy will begin ventilating its ninth tank (of 14) at the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility this month as part of a plan to decommission the tanks and prepare the site for cleanup.  KITV
  • Hawaii will invest $149.5 million to boost digital infrastructure and connect 7,000 sites to high-speed internet statewide. The Connect Kakou project (designed to expand access) is expected to benefit local communities.  KITV
  • The Hawaii County Council introduced a resolution urging state lawmakers to ban aquarium fishing for all islands, citing environmental and cultural concerns, and will revisit the measure tomorrow. DLNR plans public hearings on new fishing rules with catch limits and location restrictions.  Hawaii News Now
  • Honolulu is recruiting climate leaders for roles in the Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency. Applications for the Deputy Chief Resilience Officer and Deputy Director are due Feb. 6.  KITV

  • HMSA and Hawaii Pacific Health plan to launch One Health Hawaii to combine shared administrative resources and coordinate care for hundreds of thousands of patients. Leaders say the plan could save up to $2 billion over 10 years — with no layoffs — pending federal approval.  Hawaii News Now
  • Dr. Marel Ver says that GLP-1 medications and weight-loss surgery are helping patients manage weight at Hawai’i Pacific Health’s 360 Weight Management Center. The center (in Honolulu) uses careful evaluations and follow-ups so patients can safely lower their BMI and improve their health.  Hawaii News Now
  • Iolani graduate David Diebold is running 100 miles to honor his father (diagnosed with posterior cortical atrophy) while raising funds for Alzheimer’s research.  Hawaii News Now
