ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters responded to a fire at an abandoned building on Kuhio Avenue (in Waikiki) Sunday when they found dark smoke emanating from the second floor and quickly put out the flames. Hawaii News Now
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Officials closed the summit area of Kilauea volcano Saturday (for safety reasons) after volcanic rock fell on overlooks, trails and roads, causing debris to reach nearby communities. Residents are advised to avoid the area until conditions improve. Hawaii News Now
- ➤ Episode 41 of the Kilauea eruption began Saturday morning as lava fountains from both vents reached over 820 feet high by noon near the volcano. Hawaii News Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Green announced that FEMA temporary housing assistance for Maui wildfire survivors was extended until February 2027, providing continued support for families recovering from the 2023 wildfires + the state-supported program at Ka La‘i Ola will run through August 2029. Hawaii Free Press
- ➤ Honolulu Ocean Safety named Kurt Lager as its first commission-appointed chief after a ceremony at Honolulu Hale in December. He plans to upgrade safety measures by adding AI cameras and drones to lifeguard towers and will expand drowning prevention education for keiki (children ages 1-15). Hawaii News Now

- ➤ Gov. Josh Green said Hawaii’s award from the Rural Health Transformation Program boosts the state’s ranking to sixth in per capita rural health care funding and secures $188M today, with additional awards expected through 2030 based on its high-quality plan. Hawaii Free Press
