- ➤ Victims’ advocates are teaching parents to spot signs of child harm after studies show some keiki face abuse as young as 8, and Hoola Na Pua will host a youth benefit concert Saturday, Jan. 31 at Cafe Kopi. Hawaii News Now
- ➤ A community ceremony today in Honolulu honored WWII veteran John Gleeson, a founding member of the local aviation museum and one of the last survivors of the 8th Air Force (and the OSS), recognizing his service and lasting impact here. Hawaii News Now
- ➤ More than 1,300 participants joined Hawaii Pacific Health's 48th annual all-women fun run at Kapiolani Park as the 10K (7 a.m.) and 5K (7:20 a.m.) routes celebrated fitness and female empowerment with scenic views of Diamond Head. KITV

- ➤ The final performance of The Return of Kapaemahu is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Kuhio Beach Hula Mound in Waikiki. The free hula show celebrates the legacy of four legendary voyagers with dual male and female spirits. KITV
- ➤ Yi Xin Cafe at Market City Shopping Center on Kapiolani Boulevard will serve a six-course Lunar New Year menu featuring Hong Kong, Malaysian and Singaporean dishes from Feb. 16 to Feb. 18, and orders before Feb. 16 will include a complimentary New Year cake plus the set menu costs $238. - ➤ John Gleeson, a founding member of the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum and one of the last veterans of the 8th Air Force and OSS, was honored Sunday at the museum on Ford Island with a flyover, musical tribute and final salute following his death on Jan. 15 at age 102. Hawaii News Now
- ➤ Seven Best Picture-nominated movies are showing in Oahu theaters this weekend, including THE SECRET AGENT starring Wagner Moura+ who portrays a professor facing danger from a 1977 Brazilian military dictatorship. The film plays at Kahala Mall. Hawaii News Now
- ➤ The band Five for Fighting will perform in Honolulu soon (venue and schedule details are to be announced). Fans should check local sources for updated event information. KITV
- ➤ On Jan. 25, the State Department of Accounting and General Services hosted a free, sold out concert using vintage instruments from the 1800s to bring historic Hawaiian sounds to life (a recording is available on Hawaii State Archives Facebook). KITV
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ UH Manoa researchers received a three-year $5M grant from NSF to develop a solar-powered wastewater system that will replace outdated cesspools harming coastal waters and coral reefs in island communities. The team will test the new design at Wahiawa Wastewater Treatment Plant plus work with Honolulu officials. KITV
- ➤ Cleanup is underway after Kilauea’s Episode 41 sent debris from lava fountains that reached nearly 1,600 feet across the summit and nearby villages, and officials advised residents to exercise caution with air quality signs posted at the park. Hawaii News Now

- ➤ Windward Oahu resident Jim Anthony said the invasive coconut rhinoceros beetle has threatened vital coconut trees used for food and tradition. Legislators introduced Senate Bill 2779 Friday to protect the trees through tax credits and seed banks as an alternative to chemical pesticides. Hawaii Tribune-Herald
