COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Honolulu Zoo welcomed two female warthogs — Vitani, age 7, and Little Bit, age 9 — arriving today from California’s The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens to join resident Lenny after he lost his longtime mate in 2021.   • Josh Groban will debut his GEMS WORLD tour in Honolulu this Saturday at the Blaisdell Arena, teaming with the local Ho'olokahi Chamber Choir & offering a unique experience for fans.  KITV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Business and government leaders gathered at (downtown YMCA) to review Hawaii's economic outlook after a weak 2025. They said that while recession fears have eased, wage growth is needed to drive a strong recovery.  Hawaii News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers at UH Manoa found that up to 80% of island land snail species may be extinct due to habitat loss and invasive species (like the rosy wolf snail) and other predators. The study shows that only 10–35% of Hawaii’s unique snail diversity survives, urging conservation efforts.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Josh Green and House Speaker Nakamura named cesspool conversions a top priority to protect water quality and coral reefs. The state will form an implementation group while the DOH prepares a plan to upgrade 83,000 cesspools to meet the 2050 mandate — a key step to safeguard our ‘aina.  Hawaii Business
  • Hawaii lawmakers are considering a new bill that will allow apartment owners and renters to install plug-in solar panels on balconies to lower electric bills. A recent hearing in the legislature highlighted the benefits of this portable system for residents.  Hawaii News Now
  • Hawaiian Electric says extra crews will work to clear debris and restore power during severe storms expected Saturday and Sunday — customers are urged to prepare as heavy winds and rain may cause outages in Honolulu.  Hawaii News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Hawaii DOH Food and Drug Branch recalled Costco’s mini beignets today for undeclared hazelnut and filbert allergens. Consumers with nut allergies are advised not to use the product and return it to Costco (no illnesses have been reported).  KITV
  • The Hawaii Department of Health identified 10 chickenpox cases in children across four Kauai schools, including Kilauea Elementary and Hanalei Elementary, since Jan. 23. Officials plan a free community vaccine clinic soon — details to follow.  Hawaii News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UH softball team begins its season with a new head coach as she takes over a program that went 33-20 last season under retired coach Bob Coolen, who led the squad for 34 seasons.  Hawaii News Now
  • Madison Chock, a Team USA figure skater with Hawaii roots, will begin her fourth Winter Olympics in Italy today with her husband and skating partner, Evan Bates, while the opening ceremony airs on KHNL at 9 a.m. with an encore at 6 p.m.  Hawaii News Now
