CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Swingposium, a play blending taiko drumming, jazz, swing dance and theater (honoring Japanese Americans from WWII internment), will open in Maui on Friday, Feb. 15 at the Mayor Hannibal Tavares Pukalani Community Center. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ New Census data shows Hawaii’s population declined by 2,132 to 1,432,820 as of July 1 (fiscal 2025) with many residents leaving due to high living costs, taxes, and regulations. Grassroot President Keli‘i Akina warned affordability challenges may drive further out-migration. Hawaii Free Press
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ City and state crews cleared over 90 downed trees from weekend storms in Manoa after a nearly 100-year-old tree nearly damaged homes and cars – a hazard residents had long raised concerns about. KITV
- ➤ On Monday, gusty winds damaged nearly two dozen homes on Oahu. A Makiki home lost its 1953 awning and roofs were torn in Kalihi & Kono Place while cleanup began and no injuries were reported. KITV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Aliʻiōlani Hale tours are suspended today as crews remove a large banyan tree partially uprooted and leaning toward the building (its branches show visible cracks from strong winds). The adjacent parking lot behind the Territorial Building will be closed for at least one day, officials said. Hawaii News Now
- ➤ The Army posthumously promoted seven Japanese-American soldiers from Hawaii who were blocked from becoming officers during World War II. A ceremony was held late last month at Keehi Lagoon Memorial Park to honor their service in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Hawaii News Now
- ➤ Today the Hawaii National Guard is using high-wheeled vehicles to help residents navigate flooded areas as a storm affects the islands. They are supporting evacuations and supply deliveries while high winds and flash flooding remain a threat until 6 PM HST. KITV
- ➤ House Bill 1736 would require sterilizing cats over five months plus impose fines of $500 to $1,000 per violation. The bill passed a committee and now moves to the next review as conservation groups support its aim to protect native wildlife while some cat fanciers oppose the strict rules. Hawaii Tribune-Herald
- ➤ On Friday, a homeless sweep in Waianae raised concerns when no extra emergency shelters were opened ahead of a weekend storm that brought high winds and debris; City officials said shelters were on standby as no evacuations were needed (residents felt more support was essential during severe weather).
