  • Ko Olina hosted its first Westside Ho'olaule'a on Mar. 2 to mark the close of Makahiki season. Local families and small businesses celebrated Hawaiian culture and community spirit, hoping the event will become an annual tradition.  KITV

  • On Monday, Mar. 2, Eric Bana and the cast of Untamed held a blessing ceremony in Waimanalo that reportedly contributed $320 million to the local economy — reinforcing new film investments in the state.  KITV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Applications for cohorts 19 and 20 of the Culinary Institute of the Pacific and CIA five-day course are open for Hawaii chefs. Eligible professionals with three years’ experience can apply until March 13 for cohort 19 or March 20 for cohort 20 to win full tuition scholarships.  KITV
  • A new bill could add the history of Hawaii’s 100th Battalion to public school lessons — the Senate Ways and Means committee reviewed the proposal Monday in Honolulu.  KITV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State officials cleared Waiawa Stream on Monday at about 9:40 a.m. after heavy rains and storms caused it to overflow with debris — including items from a nearby junkyard and remnants of a homeless camp — following local resident concerns.  Hawaii News Now
  • Mālama Maunalua hosted the Eat the Invaders fishing tournament yesterday to protect Maunalua Bay from invasive fish — a move to help restore local reefs — with a community fish fry and conservation education at Kuliʻouʻou Beach Park.  KITV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews are repairing the southeast corner of Alexander and Metcalf streets today, affecting the H-1 Freeway westbound onramp traffic + delays may continue for several hours as work proceeds.  Hawaii News Now
  • City officials plan to begin outreach in about two months to remove a hidden encampment near Keehi Stream, where overgrowth of mangroves + kiawe has concealed makeshift structures and raised concerns for Kahauiki Village residents.  Hawaii News Now
  • DHHL now uses project leases so Native Hawaiian families can choose lots before arranging financing. Chairman Kali Watson said the program will include rent with option to purchase communities & partner with local agencies to build neighborhoods as over 29,000 beneficiaries wait for homestead housing.  Hawaii Free Press
