ECONOMY NEWS

  • Many young residents in Hawai‘i face a tough choice as high living costs and limited job opportunities push them to consider leaving. A 2025 Holomua Collective survey found 36% expect to move away in the next five years, while others remain for family ties and island beauty.  Hawaii Business

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kamehameha Schools will host its 106th Song Contest on Friday, where 100 high school students will debut original songs in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi to honor Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Live broadcast begins at 6:30 p.m. on K5 with the competition starting at 7:30 p.m.  Hawaii News Now
  • Young chefs in grades 5 to 12 are invited to join Hawaii 4-H's GET Local Video Cooking Contest, which teaches nutrition, food safety and kitchen skills on the island. Registration ends March 20 and video submissions of five to seven minutes are due March 27 plus winners will enjoy an immersive farm and culinary adventure on Oahu.  Hawaii Tribune-Herald
  • Students across Hawaii are writing lyrics for the Ho'o Lōkahi Lyric Writing Challenge - a contest offering ukulele prizes and artist visits that celebrates local aloha culture.  KITV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A powerful kona storm will hit the western islands today and spread inland by midweek, raising flash flood risks and triggering strong winds and heavy rain. Residents should monitor local weather updates as flood watches remain in effect.  KITV
  • Kilauea eruption phase 43 begins today when tephra from Halema‘uma‘u falls on Volcanoes National Park, which is closed. Highway 11 is shut from mile marker 24 to 40 & local residents sensitive to volcanic gases are advised to shelter indoors.  Hawaii Tribune-Herald
  • Scientists from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported that a Kilauea eruption forced park closures & lava fountains reached 1,150 feet at about 12:15 p.m. on the Halemaumau crater floor, where lava flows covered one-third of the area.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands will award over 2,600 leases this year to boost affordable housing, as noted on today’s Spotlight Now episode with chair Kali Watson and Jeff Gilbreath of Hawaii Community Lending who described homestead financing differences.  Hawaii News Now
  • A 12-inch water main break in Pearl City near the 1170 block of Waimano Home Road closed the right mauka-bound lane and urged residents to use a water wagon near 1145 Waimano Home Road, while repair crews work on the leak; the Board of Water Supply said updates will follow.  KITV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Demolition began at the old Aloha Stadium as the state starts a $4 billion public-private redevelopment project. The project will reshape the site into a new entertainment district and housing over the next 20 years, with the stadium debuting in early 2029.  Hawaii Business

  • On Tuesday, University of Hawaii baseball defeated Chaminade 15-0 at Les Murakami Stadium after six pitchers combined for a seven-inning two-hitter and Kody Watanabe drove in six runs.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
