COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents queued early today for a supply drive offering ice, water, and food in response to the Kona low storm — many arrived even before the distribution began.  Hawaii News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Severe storm conditions damaged a home in Kahaluu today, forcing a local family out when water soaked the attic and collapsed the ceiling; flash flood conditions will impact Oahu, Maui, Molokai, and the Big Island from 6pm today to 6pm Sunday with the heaviest rain falling Friday night through Saturday.  KITV
  • Hawaiian Electric crews will repair a utility pole and power lines on Likelike Hwy after a Kona low storm, causing the Honolulu-bound lanes to close partially on Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Police + flagmen will direct traffic from mile marker 5.5 to 6.5.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Honolulu Police Department will host a firearm buyback event on Thursday, March 26 at Aloha Stadium from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants aged 21+ may exchange unwanted handguns, rifles, shotguns, bump stocks, and Glock switches for Foodland gift cards + help improve neighborhood safety.  Hawaii News Now
  • Crews from HIDOT have closed 600 ft of the makai lane on Kamehameha Highway near Waimea Bay today due to a landslide from heavy rains. Lane closures run from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. as stabilization work with steel pipes + concrete continues, and drivers are urged to plan ahead.  KITV
  • About 85 students rallied today at the State Capitol during Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action, with youth advocates and officials urging lawmakers to ban disposable e-cigarettes — a push to protect public health.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • State officials are reviewing JERA’s plan to modernize Oahu’s energy system by replacing old oil-fired generators with a new hybrid LNG facility to lower costs, improve reliability & boost clean energy. The proposal could create over 1,100 temporary jobs and 170 long-term positions, with operations targeted for 2030.  Hawaii Free Press
  • Hawaiian Electric Company restored power for over 1,500 customers today after a Kona-low storm, but crews continue to repair outages affecting about 3,230 customers across Maui, Hawaii island and Oahu.
