COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Otake Camp home of Marck Aphay was destroyed by a flood that tore the duplex from the ground and pushed it (400 yards) to Waialua Bridge on Sunday. Local residents are rallying to help those affected as they start rebuilding sentimental belongings.  Hawaii News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Earlier this week, a 60-day waiver of the Jones Act allowed foreign vessels to deliver energy products and fertilizer to Hawaii, highlighting shipping shortages in the U.S. fleet — designed to boost national security. The move may prompt lawmakers to explore modernizing the rule.  Hawaii Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • HIDOE announced that 13 schools in Hawaii Island, Oahu and Molokai will close due to damage from the second Kona low storm. Officials are assessing repairs — further updates will be provided as safety is confirmed.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Sunday, Hawaii Insurance Division launched a Post-Disaster Insurance Claims Guide and video to help residents document flood insurance claims after recent storms revealed that flooding can affect even low-risk areas. Residents are advised to follow the guide when filing their claims.  Hawaii News Now
  • The city’s Department of Environmental Services — ENV — will deploy crews to pick up storm debris on the North Shore today after the storm. Residents can expect affected areas to be cleared as teams work to restore safety.  Hawaii News Now
  • Hawaiian Electric restored power to about 2,200 customers between Waimea and Kuilima/Turtle Bay as crews assessed flood-damaged circuits, and fewer than 220 remain without power on Oahu, Maui County, and Hawaii Island + some customers may need repairs before reconnecting.  Hawaii News Now
  • A HI-EMA administrator explained today that a Kona low is affecting statewide water conditions while officials review data on safe water supplies (more updates to come).  Hawaii News Now
  • U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda (D-Hawaii) toured storm-damaged areas in Maui today and said she is here to support local residents as recovery efforts continue.  Hawaii News Now
