COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Honolulu County merged storm recovery services for North Shore residents by consolidating local aid centers at Waialua District Park on April 3 (operating in the park’s gym and lot). A Community Assistance Fair at BYU Hawaii Gymnasium on April 4 offered extra help; park services resume Monday.  Hawaii News Now
  • Surf brands showed community support on Saturday by donating hundreds of thousands dollars of supplies from the Billabong Haleiwa store to flood victims on the North Shore & urging locals to help struggling businesses. Each recipient received up to $500 worth of clothing and essential goods.  Hawaii News Now
  • Local beekeeper Naka explained how kiawe trees brought bees to the islands, helping agriculture and starting kiawe honey production. His story shows how ranching and beekeeping work together to benefit local farms.  Hawaii News Now

  • A petition is gathering support to keep the Neiman Marcus store open at Ala Moana Center amid its planned closure in May. Longtime shoppers (including Joyce Tomonari) are urging decisionmakers to consider the store’s future as a key shopping destination since 1998.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

  • Guaiqueri Hawaii is celebrating its six-year anniversary today at Sacred Hearts Academy (4 p.m. to 8 p.m.) and will feature its savory and sweet empanadas for National Empanada Day on Wednesday, April 8.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Josh Green and HIEMA launched a statewide Disaster Case Management Program to help storm survivors access recovery plans; the 90-day program supports Oahu, Maui, and soon Kauai and Hawaii Island, and those affected can call 211.  Hawaii News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • After Kona low storms in Oahu, the Hawaiian Humane Society reported a puppy with leptospirosis from floodwaters, urging pet owners to watch for symptoms and seek early treatment; the nonprofit also invites 100 households to foster shelter dogs with free orientations at Moiliili and Kosasa Family campuses until April 11.  Hawaii News Now
