COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Aloha Stadium was demolished yesterday — ending a long era for the landmark as plans for redevelopment are set in motion, impacting local community views and future area use.  Hawaii News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • PBS Hawai‘i marks 60 years of sharing local stories with a pledge program scheduled for April 30 at 7:30 p.m.—the broadcast and online event highlights decades of educational and cultural programming.  Honolulu Magazine
  • Hawaiian Airlines will present its May Day Concert on May 1 at the Bishop Museum with Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winner Zachary Lum (member of Keauhou) serving as showrunner executive producer.   • The Hawaiian Council and Ko Olina hosted the “Aloha in Action” music festival Thursday with 7,000 tickets sold to raise funds for storm relief in Ko Olina (and beyond). Dozens of local vendors participated as community members supported families affected by flooding.  KITV

  • Kilauea began its 45th eruption early Thursday with lava fountaining up to 700 ft at Halema’uma’u — officials said the fountain’s intensity has since diminished and no tephra affected Hwy 11.  KITV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Public Utilities Commission opened a docket on April 22 to design a Virtual Power Plant program that will coordinate customer-sited energy resources to enhance grid operations across Hawaiian Electric's service territories. Interested parties must file motions within 20 days.  Hawaii Free Press
  • Lane closures on westbound Kamehameha Highway near Aiea Cemetery will continue through early May for slope repairs after severe weather caused erosion. HDOT began work on Apr. 13 and advises drivers to use alternate routes.  KITV
  • Hawaii will honor a man known for decades of service at Kalaupapa starting Monday, April 27, with the annual Dutton Day event; lawmakers continue debating the future of the Hansen’s disease colony after its last patient passes.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

  • Kamehameha girls captured the ILH bodyboard title—Kailana Tong-Matthews led her team with a 12.83 score at a recent championship, and they will compete at the first-ever High School Surf State Championships on May 1 at Ho’okipa on Maui’s North Shore.  Hawaii News Now
  • The first ever High School State Surf Championships will be held next week as high school surfers compete for the inaugural state title at a local venue. Organizers say the event will highlight emerging talent across the state.  Hawaii News Now
