COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hawaii Foodbank now has about two weeks of food on hand after a $4 million cut in federal CCC funds, which were used to buy proteins like chicken and pork. The Foodbank will shift to less expensive alternatives and send fewer Senior Food Boxes—dropping from 2,200 to 1,900 each month—while one in three households face food insecurity.  KITV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 74-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured on Sunday afternoon in Makiki at the intersection of Liholiho Street — Wilder Avenue when Honolulu Emergency Services responded around 2:50 p.m. and began an investigation into the crash.  Hawaii News Now

  • Hula Hālau ʻO Kamuela won the overall top honor at the 62nd annual Merrie Monarch Festival after 27 performances in kahiko and ‘auana competitions—its directors Nā Kumu Kunewa Mook and Kauʻionālani Kamanaʻo said the victory reflects the hard work of their students.  Hawaii News Now
  • On Saturday, May 3, Bishop Museum will host Celebrate Micronesia Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will offer music, dance, art, food and storytelling from Pacific communities — pre-registration is recommended for discounted entry.  Hawaii News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from JABSOM honored 124 donors who left their bodies to science at a ceremony that began with a formal program at the medical school and ended with a paddle out and ash scattering at Magic Island—families of the donors were given a chance to say goodbye.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers approved a law that raises the tax on hotels and vacation rentals from 9.25% to 10% and adds an 11% tax on cruise ship cabins to fund projects that address Hawaii’s climate emergency—expected to generate between $85 million and $100 million a year. Gov. Josh Green said he will sign the bill after final votes and work with legislators on spending the revenue while keeping industry concerns in mind.  Hawaii News Now
  • Lawmakers approved bills that would impose stiffer penalties for illegal fireworks, restrict new landfill sites, and require Hawaiian Electric to add a charge for a wildfire disaster recovery fund — these measures will be voted on by the full legislature next week.  Hawaii News Now

  • The Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Company is recalling dark chocolate-covered macadamias that may contain undeclared almonds & cashews due to allergen risks. Customers are urged to check product labels and stores are expected to remove the affected items soon.  KITV
