  • On Saturday, a dozen incarcerated mothers and their 19 children spent time together at Women’s Community Correctional Center in Kailua — an event organized by Keiki O Ka ʻĀina Family Learning Centers that included games, floral activities and toy giveaways — as they celebrated Mother’s Day.  KITV

  • Two vehicles caught fire on the H-1 Freeway near the Aiea Heights Overpass on May 3 at about 1:30 p.m.—police closed three lanes and later reopened two eastbound lanes while heavy traffic persisted.  Hawaii News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Three men are charged with defrauding the Veterans Affairs of over $9.1M in education benefits for veterans; Brian Matsudo, owner of a Honolulu massage therapy school, pleaded guilty in April for conspiracy to commit wire fraud — federal officials said — while Marshall Scott and Raheem Wells face additional fraud charges and could get up to 20 years in prison if convicted.  Hawaii Free Press
  • Honolulu police launched an arson investigation after a fire destroyed a newly renovated playground in Wahiawa on Thursday night & community members expressed concern about local safety.  KITV

  • A team from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Hui Iwi Kuamoo retrieved five sets of ancestral Hawaiian remains during formal ceremonies at Ulster Museum — they are heading home to Hawaii today.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers approved measures to stop illegal fireworks after a New Year’s explosion, adding stiffer penalties and $7.65 million in funding for eight new law enforcement positions+new bills also revise the aerial fireworks definition to ease prosecutions. The bills now head to the Governor’s office for his review.  Hawaii News Now
  • On April 30, lawmakers approved HB1422 which exempts nonprofit and community-based organizations from the Motor Carrier Law—aiming to support sustainable transportation and reduce visitor traffic. The bill now moves to the Governor’s desk after gaining strong backing from local officials and community groups.  Hawaii Free Press
