- ➤ Three men are charged with defrauding the Veterans Affairs of over $9.1M in education benefits for veterans; Brian Matsudo, owner of a Honolulu massage therapy school, pleaded guilty in April for conspiracy to commit wire fraud — federal officials said — while Marshall Scott and Raheem Wells face additional fraud charges and could get up to 20 years in prison if convicted. - ➤ State lawmakers approved measures to stop illegal fireworks after a New Year’s explosion, adding stiffer penalties and $7.65 million in funding for eight new law enforcement positions+new bills also revise the aerial fireworks definition to ease prosecutions. - ➤ On April 30, lawmakers approved HB1422 which exempts nonprofit and community-based organizations from the Motor Carrier Law—aiming to support sustainable transportation and reduce visitor traffic. The bill now moves to the Governor’s desk after gaining strong backing from local officials and community groups. Hawaii Free Press
