  • Clyde Aikau—esteemed waterman and younger brother of Eddie Aikau—died Saturday evening at his Waimanalo home at age 75; his family said he passed peacefully and noted that memorial service details will be announced soon.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

  • Yohei Sushi Kāhala celebrated its one-year anniversary after opening at Kū‘ono Marketplace, honoring Japanese tradition and community support. The restaurant will launch a new omakase course in June and update its à la carte menu with seasonal ingredients.  Honolulu Magazine
  • Niu Soft Serve in Mō‘ili‘ili has seen its hot kūlolo sundae become its top seller as brothers ’Aiku‘e and Kekahu Napoleon-Ahn use a process that takes 24 hours to cook kalo, coconut milk, brown sugar and salt—drawing local customers with a unique Hawaiian twist. CRIME NEWS

  • Two men were injured during an argument at a Hawaii Kai residence Sunday night + police say an unknown gunman discharged a firearm around 8:50 p.m. and fled the scene, with both victims receiving treatment while an investigation for first-degree attempted murder continues.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In the 2025 legislative session, Hawaii Family Forum reported that none of the harmful bills they tracked passed, keeping key family and religious values protected. The forum will soon launch training programs—teacher workshops and legal seminars—to help local leaders prepare for the next session beginning January 21 and the upcoming election.  Hawaii Free Press
  • State lawmakers passed several housing reform bills that will speed up permit reviews and reduce fees for new home projects—measures that also streamline historic preservation to lower construction costs. Some coastal property owners remain excluded from the new protections, and local experts say further work is needed to address all housing challenges.  Hawaii Free Press
  • Former Honolulu City Council member John Henry Felix, who witnessed Pearl Harbor and dedicated his life to public service, died at 4 a.m. Monday in Hawaii Kai at 94 from end-stage renal disease — his son noted he would have reached 95 on June 14. He chaired organizations like Abilities Unlimited and the Hawaii Medial Assurance Association — community leaders honor his long-time commitment to service.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
