  • Parents in Honolulu can sign up children ages 6 to 13 for City and County Summer Fun 2025—registration opens May 12 through May 16 online. The program runs from June 9 to July 25 at 63 sites with a fee of $125 per child—teenagers 13 to 17 can apply to be Junior Leaders.  KITV
  • Nearly two years after surviving an acid attack, Honolulu teacher Danying Zhang spoke at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce to share her recovery journey—expressing gratitude for the support that helped her heal.  KITV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Honolulu Police Department is investigating a fatal crash in Pearl City that occurred on Monday at 11:30 p.m. when a 65-year-old man, who was not wearing a seatbelt, crossed a double solid yellow centerline and collided with a 33-year-old motorist whose condition is good & the man later died after his vehicle rebounded off a tree, with officials saying speed was not a factor.  Hawaii News Now
  • Police said a northbound vehicle struck a 61-year-old pedestrian who stepped into the traffic lane in Kalihi—he was declared dead at the scene.  Hawaii News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Hawaii at Manoa now offers a master’s degree in artificial intelligence and a graduate certificate in AI and data science—classes will begin this fall and applications are open, with both programs designed to help students and workers gain skills for tech roles.  Hawaii News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On May 6, Kīlauea erupted with lava fountains reaching over 500 feet in its 20th episode+ the volcano showed increased tremors and a shift in summit tilt+ park officials urged visitors to heed updates on air quality and falling debris.  KITV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Honolulu City Council approved on April 30 the new Department of Housing and Land Management to streamline housing efforts by combining key functions from several agencies into a unit with 51 full-time positions—this move aims to boost affordable housing on Oʻahu. Kevin D. Auger will lead the department as it builds on the city's housing strategy and plans for future expansions.  Hawaii Free Press
  • Attorney General Raúl Labrador from Idaho and Attorney General Austin Knudsen from Montana filed an amicus brief on May 5 urging the Supreme Court to overturn Hawaii’s law that bans carrying firearms on most public land; they claim the law violates the Constitution and warn that if the ban stands, other states may follow—fueling wider concerns over gun rights.  Hawaii Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • The new Behavioral Health Crisis Center in Iwilei now offers urgent care for psychiatric patients and reduces wait times for police and ERs. City officials said the $17.2 million facility was redesigned with safety improvements—like a padded room and anti-ligature furniture—to support Oahu’s MH-1 patients.  Hawaii News Now

  • Kamehameha Schools Kapalama—top seed in the high school state baseball tournament—will begin play in Maui on Thursday after a 15-2 record and a third straight ILH title, and the team aims to win its fifth state championship.
