COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hawaii News Now is hosting ALOHA for HAWAIʻI today as a live, daylong fundraiser for flood relief after the Kona Low storms. The event airs on K5, HNN’s website and app from 6 a.m. with additional programming including an online auction and live interviews (proceeds benefitting local relief organizations).  Hawaii News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Pagoda Hotel on Rycroft Street has reopened today after a 9.9 million dollar renovation. The locally owned hotel now features modern guest rooms, a restored koi pond, and pagoda lanterns, with Rainbow’s Drive Inn and Paris Baguette Bakery set to open soon.  Hawaii News Now
  • Hawaiian Electric's parent company reported a Q1 profit of $30 million (up from $27 million last year) despite $13 million in higher storm costs. The firm filed for rate hikes to boost revenue in 2027 and 2028 to cover ongoing expenses.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices are nearing record highs with the statewide average for regular gas at $5.65 per gallon, according to AAA Hawaii. Economists warn global oil tensions could push prices higher in coming months – making gas, power and shipping more expensive.  KITV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seven graduating seniors from Honolulu Community College showcased their final fashion collections during the A Night at the Museum event at Capitol Modern Museum on May 11. The presentation marked the culmination of the college’s Fashion Technology Program.  KITV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction began on the Wahiawa Dam project, which will expand the spillway and shore up the embankment to add 800 million gallons + boost safety. The $65 million work will lower water levels while in progress and finish by summer next year, keeping the reservoir available for recreation.  KITV
  • The Honolulu Police Department is marking National Police Week from May 11 through May 15 with a mayor’s proclamation at Kahala Mall Monday morning, a memorial procession at HPD headquarters Monday evening, plus an awards ceremony at the Blaisdell Center on Wednesday and a breakfast on Friday to honor service.  Hawaii News Now

  • Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center earned its fifth consecutive spot on Newsweek's list of America's Best Maternity Hospitals for 2026, highlighting local excellence in maternity care.  KITV
  • Survivors of the Maui wildfires continue to face mental health challenges nearly three years after the disaster affected Lahaina and surrounding communities. State officials will expand support with a new licensing law starting July 1 (Act 93) to boost the workforce amid ongoing recovery during Mental Health Awareness Month.  Hawaii Tribune-Herald

  • UH volleyball won the national championship on Monday as players including Kristian Titriyski, Trevell Jordan & Louis Sakanoko turned the match around against UC Irvine at Pauley Pavilion.  Hawaii Tribune-Herald
