CULTURE NEWS

  • Organizers released details for the Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaii ceremony at Ala Moana Beach Park on Monday, May 25. Attendees must use official lanterns from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and can catch a free shuttle from 800 Olomehani St. + discounted parking is offered at Ala Moana Center.  KITV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • HNN meteorologist Drew Davis said forecasters expect an above-normal hurricane season in the central Pacific, with 5 to 13 tropical cyclones (each at least tropical depression strength) developing in the coming months.  Hawaii News Now
  • Hawaiian Electric is monitoring high winds and dry conditions in Kawaihae, Waikoloa, West Maui, Omaopio, and Pulehu and may cut power to prevent wildfires — residents in these areas are urged to plan ahead and secure emergency supplies over the next 24 to 48 hours.  Hawaii News Now
  • Heavy rains have spurred plant growth that may catch fire when dry, so officials urge residents to clear dead vegetation and prepare their properties. The state is promoting the Ready, Set, Go program to help communities reduce wildfire risks.  Hawaii News Now
  • Property owners in Aiea Heights are removing tall albizia trees at the Lapaolu condo development to avoid dangerous falls during hurricane season, which starts on June 1. Experts say the trees can fail in high winds + professional removal is advised to safeguard homes.  Hawaii News Now
  • NOAA forecasts an active Pacific hurricane season fueled by El Niño and warmer ocean temperatures, and advises Honolulu residents to update emergency plans as new storm surge warnings and updated hurricane graphics will be introduced through November 30.  KITV
  • A new National Clean Water Report shows that three Hawaii beaches, including Punaluu Beach Park and Moloaa Stream mouth, exceeded recreational health standards due to high bacteria levels. Experts warn that untreated sewage from 83,000 cesspools and storm runoff may worsen coastal pollution unless cesspool conversions progress by 2050.  Hawaii News Now

  • Gov. Josh Green urged residents to prepare for severe tropical storms as officials preposition resources+funds and set aside $100 million for disasters while finalizing evacuation and shelter plans. State leaders warn that over a dozen cyclones could bring dangerous floods and structural damage.  KITV
  • Honolulu officials announced that on Monday, May 25, city offices, driver's licensing centers, and satellite halls will be closed for Memorial Day while emergency services, parks, the zoo, and trash collection remain available. TheBus will run on a Sunday schedule and special parking rules apply in Lanikai (and Waikiki areas).  KITV

  • Kapolei High School’s flag football team won the inaugural Division II state title with a 77-19 win last weekend.
