CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities reported a shooting in Makaha Wednesday night that left a 19-year-old man dead & three others seriously injured when emergency crews responded at about 9 p.m. to a Lahaina Street address while the investigation continues.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

CULTURE NEWS

  • Families and community members gathered at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve on Tuesday, May 27th for the premiere of the 19-minute experimental film 'Hanauma: He Wahi Loli Mau'—part of the city's Wahi Pana: Storied Places public art project funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies. The event featured a hula performance by Hula Hālau ʻO Kamuela, remarks from Mayor Rick Blangiardi, and a panel with local artists.  KITV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Hawaii State Department of Education announced that free summer meals will be served at 68 public schools starting June 12 for keiki 18 and under using the USDA’s Seamless Summer Option program. Meals are available Monday through Friday on campus—no grab-and-go options are offered and keiki do not need to be enrolled in school.  KITV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Castle High School will host the Going Green Recycling Event on May 31 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at its auditorium parking lot, where residents can drop off electronic waste and recyclables—Rep. Scot Z. Matayoshi and Rep. Lisa Kitagawa urge planning ahead due to predicted long wait times.  KITV

  • The Neighborhood Commission Office announced on May 27th that the 2025 Neighborhood Board election results are available online — the 33 active boards include nearly 400 volunteers who advise City government.  Hawaii Free Press
  • Maritime attorney Peter Walsh challenged Hawaii’s new 11% transient accommodations tax in a Bloomberg Law op-ed published (May 27), arguing that the tax may violate constitutional commerce rules and trigger a chain of lawsuits. He said the tax treats time onboard as a hotel stay and could set a legal precedent for every Hawaiian cruise port (he has long represented cruise passengers in injury claims).  Hawaii Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC removed COVID-19 shots for healthy children and pregnant women from its recommended schedule, which spurred debate among health experts. Families in Honolulu are now discussing the change with their doctors—checking what vaccine options they should follow.  KITV

  • The University of Hawaii released the full 2025 schedule for its Rainbow Wahine volleyball team, which will play 29 matches including 17 home games at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center—fresh off a fifth-straight Big West Championship, the team will play its final season in the Big West before moving to the Mountain West Conference—beginning with a home game against #21 Marquette on August 29th.  Hawaii News Now
