ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Honolulu Fire Department responded to a fire at Kalakaua Homes in the Pawaa area on May 28 and rescued two residents from the 9th floor—EMS provided care for one patient with smoke inhalation who declined additional treatment.  KITV

CRIME NEWS

  • John Garside, 54, was indicted on May 29 after he reportedly shot a 23-year-old woman on Tantalus Drive at 6:30 a.m. on May 21 after she refused his demand for sex—he is held without bail and is scheduled to enter a plea on June 4.  KITV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Oahu is hosting a busy weekend of local events—as swap meets, markets, festivals, and concerts including a Bone Thugs-n-Harmony show at Neal S. Blaisdell Arena bring diverse island vibes—as May ends and summer nears, with a few events extending into early June for community food, crafts, and live performances.  KITV
  • Lilo and Stitch returns to Honolulu to showcase local talent—using music from local artists and a familiar soundtrack to celebrate ohana and Hawaiian heritage.  KITV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On May 28, DBEDT lowered its growth forecast for Hawai‘i to 1.2 percent in 2025 from 1.7 percent due to tariffs, slowing tourism, rising consumer inflation and global economic uncertainty—officials now expect growth to rebound to 1.5 percent in 2026 and reach 1.8 percent by 2028. The report also noted that strong construction activity and a stable labor market have helped the economy recover.  Hawaii Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials posted shark warning signs at Chuns Beach on May 29th after an 8-10-foot shark described as aggressive was seen at about 10:39 a.m.—lifeguards advise visitors to check for updates as no injuries have been reported.  KITV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Joe Gedeon was appointed by Governor Josh Green on May 28th to fill Representative Gene Ward’s seat for House District 18 covering Hawaii Kai, Kalama Valley and Portlock — he has filed with the Campaign Spending Commission as the initial step to run in the November election.  Hawaii Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Hawaii announced that five Rainbow Warriors football games will air nationally this season. The schedule lists a season opener against Stanford on August 23rd at 1:30 p.m. Hawaii time on CBS, a game at Arizona on August 30th on TNT, a game at Air Force on September 27th on Fox Sports, a road game at San Jose State on November 1st at 4:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, and a home game against UNLV on November 21st at 5:30 p.m. on Fox Sports 1—additional game details will be shared soon.  Hawaii News Now
