ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On May 29, the Center for Biological Diversity sued the Air Force and Fish and Wildlife Service for not releasing records on plans to build landing pads for SpaceX rockets on Johnston Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, a vital site for seabirds and marine life. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii (in Honolulu) and the records are expected (within two to three months) to reveal whether the environmental review meets legal standards. - ➤ On May 25, the eruption at Halemaʻumaʻu reached record lava fountain heights of about 1,150 feet — the highest observed during the ongoing eruption that began on Dec. 23 — and the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory updated its volcano alert notifications to better warn island residents and aviators of airborne hazards.
