COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, nonprofit leaders said that cuts in federal funds have caused a $4 million food loss and rising service needs—local agencies note that demand for help has grown since the pandemic. Hawaii legislators have set aside $50 million for nonprofits—though community leaders warn the money may not fully cover the needs.  Hawaii News Now
  • The Waikiki community will honor Uncle Clyde Aikau with a paddle out event on June 26 in Waikiki— an occasion to celebrate his life and legacy.  KITV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An 86-year-old woman died in a collision on Kipapa Drive in Mililani on June 10th—marking Oahu’s 33rd traffic fatality this year.  KITV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State attorneys general from 15 states, including Hawaii, sued the federal government Monday over a settlement that returns seized rapid-fire triggers, which they say breaks federal law by effectively distributing machine guns. The lawsuit seeks to cancel the distribution provision and names gun rights groups and trigger manufacturers—moves that the states claim will increase risks of gun violence and related costs.  Hawaii Free Press
  • The Hawaii Supreme Court heard arguments as HMSA defended its preauthorization and contract rules that critics say interfere with patient care—plaintiffs cited a case where a denied MRI may have worsened a cancer patient’s condition. Attorneys for HMSA argued that the standardized contracts negotiated with the Hawaii Medical Association help doctors deliver care quickly while critics insist there is little room for negotiation.  Hawaii News Now
  • Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi is working with a public-private partnership to restore the historic Waikīkī War Memorial Natatorium, a closed ocean-fed pool that once honored local World War I veterans. The city is finalizing design and permit plans with the nonprofit Friends of the Natatorium so construction can begin in time for a centennial celebration in August 2027—engineers are addressing water flow and safety issues.  KITV

  • Queen’s Health Systems held a blessing ceremony on Tuesday to celebrate its expanded Emergency Department at its downtown campus—upgrading treatment rooms from 35 to 76 following a $7.5 million donation from Candice Uytengsu.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
