COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nanakuli High School students organized a food distribution event that provided free food to over 600 families on the Waianae coast this weekend (supporting those impacted by COVID) in partnership with Elepaio Social Services; State Senator Samantha Decorte said the event sold out within a day. Officials announced that another food distribution event will be scheduled soon (date to be determined) to continue supporting families in need.  Hawaii News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 30-year-old (Boston man) fell 30 feet from a steep cliff on Wednesday night at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park after venturing off the Byron Ledge Trail to view the Kilauea eruption; first responders rescued him by rappelling down the cliff and hoisting him to safety, and he sustained minor facial injuries.  Hawaii Tribune-Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested a 34-year-old man who allegedly lunged at a 29-year-old woman with a knife in front of Honolulu District Court on June 13—she fled uninjured and he remains in custody for first-degree terroristic threatening.  KITV
  • A new pilot unit within the Department of Law Enforcement will send nine officers to patrol agricultural lands on Oahu’s North Shore and Hawaii Island to fight theft, vandalism, and trespassing while awaiting the governor’s signature on legislation with mandatory punishment and a forfeiture clause — a response to crimes that cost local farmers millions, state Sen. Herbert Tim Richards said.  Hawaii News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • After returning in 2024 following a five-year break, the 42nd annual Pan-Pacific Festival runs until June 15 in Waikiki and features cultural arts, food vendors and stage performances. Streets downtown are closed today for the King Kamehameha Floral Parade which starts at 9:00 a.m. at King Street — drivers should expect detours and delays.  KITV
  • Lei was draped onto King Kamehameha I’s statue on Friday during the Kamehameha Day ceremony — today the 108th King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade will be held downtown.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

  • Isaac Choy, a Hawaii Tourism Authority executive, said he lost his job after uncovering improper spending at the agency. He claims his whistleblower lawsuit shows that his discoveries led to his dismissal.  Hawaii News Now
