- ➤ Honolulu Police arrested 81-year-old landlord Daniel T.W. Woo at 1:19 p.m. Monday in the 1900 block of Algaroba Street after he struck his 57-year-old tenant with a dangerous instrument and tried to choke her with a rope while she had an active protective order — officers said neighbors had heard her screams. - ➤ A jury awarded $3.15 million to a 22-year-old former sous chef who said he was repeatedly abused—by punches, kicks, and a skewer stab—in his early weeks at a Honolulu upscale restaurant owned by Kazutomo Robert Hori. Hawaii News Now

- ➤ Students from Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Iolani School and Kealakehe High School worked with scientists at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s Conservation Genetics Division to create the first draft genome of the endangered palila, which gave key insights into its genetic diversity and vulnerabilities. The breakthrough provides guidance for conservation strategies—such as habitat restoration and disease management—for the bird now found only on Mauna Kea. Hawaii News Now

- ➤ The City and County of Honolulu announced that on Friday, July 4 its offices will be closed for Independence Day while emergency services remain available and transit agencies like TheBus and Skyline will run on special schedules. The Neal S. Blaisdell Center, satellite city halls, and driver licensing centers will be closed—Lanikai parking will be banned from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. for fireworks—. KITV
- ➤ On July 1, the Honolulu Board of Water Supply filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Navy after the Navy’s release of petroleum & hazardous chemicals in November 2021 contaminated Oʻahu’s drinking water and caused injuries to residents. The lawsuit seeks $1.2B to cover past, ongoing & future restoration and mitigation work as the Board holds the Navy responsible for failing to prevent the environmental damage. Hawaii Free Press
- ➤ Hawaiian Telcom contributed $6 million to a project that will soon bring high-speed fiber internet to over 45,000 public housing residents—local officials expect the rollout to boost connectivity in affected communities. KITV
