- ➤ A 25-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition after a two-moped crash near the intersection of Kuhio Avenue + Uluniu Street in Waikiki Thursday night as police confirmed one rider was not wearing a helmet. KITV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Native Hawaiian man from Maui convicted of a hate crime in 2014 for attacking Christopher Kunzelman during a property dispute will be resentenced after a federal appeals court upheld his conviction on July 10—he may face up to three extra years in prison. Hawaii News Now
- ➤ New laws on Oahu have led the Honolulu Police Department to team with city prosecutors, planning officials, and Homeland Security Investigations to crack down on illegal game rooms—reducing them from about 160 last year to an estimated 60-70 this year after 15 arrests and $150,000 in seized funds. - ➤ Kaulana Na Pua Inc. will host its fourth annual Polynesian Performing Arts summer program on July 14 in Kona at the Ahupua’a of Kahalu’u where young people learn Tahitian, Māori and Hawaiian dance, mele and songs—artists will fly in from Aotearoa, French Polynesia and Tahiti to teach during the two-week event running Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for $120 until spaces fill. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Josh Green signed 313 bills into law earlier this week during the 2025 legislative session—these include the state budget for fiscal 2026 and 2027, a new green fee for climate resiliency, expanded free school meals for students, tougher penalties for fireworks offenses, wildfire relief funding and fire safety improvements. Hawaii Free Press
- ➤ Sen. Mazie Hirono introduced a bill that would require immigration enforcement officers to wear clear badges and ban non-safety masks—she said that hiding faces causes public confusion and allows dangerous impersonators. The proposed law will also have the department report on compliance and investigate any complaints. Hawaii News Now
- ➤ Gov. Josh Green signed six bills on Wednesday that now become law, including a reform to the Contractor Repair Act to ease home construction defect claims and a measure to speed up permits for rebuilding shoreline rental housing after disasters—while he vetoed eight other bills. In all, 307 of 322 bills passed in the session from Jan. 15 to May 2 became law. Hawaii Tribune-Herald
- ➤ Judge Peter Cahill extended the filing deadline for Maui wildfire survivors to join a $4B settlement from August 8 until October 1 so survivors can file their claims—over 22,000 survivors have already engaged attorneys and are set to secure compensation after the 2023 wildfires. Hawaii News Now

- ➤ Honolulu first responders warned that a mix of Bromazolam and fentanyl was linked to five overdose deaths on Oahu so far in 2025, including a 36-year-old man who died in early June. Officials noted that Bromazolam does not respond to Narcan — full resuscitative efforts are needed to support patients until the drugs clear from their systems. Hawaii News Now
