ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A collision in Ewa Beach occurred on Saturday morning at about 5:42 a.m. on Fort Weaver Road when a speeding 37-year-old man’s vehicle hit a 72-year-old driver’s car—resulting in the 37-year-old being pronounced dead at the scene and the older driver taken to a hospital in critical condition.  KITV

CRIME NEWS

  • Honolulu police arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder after he allegedly tried to run over a 26-year-old man with his vehicle in Pearl City on Saturday night—he fled the scene but was later found and his vehicle recovered.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • Police arrested Dante Miller, 51, for allegedly shooting another man in Kalihi on July 7 which resulted in the victim’s hospitalization — he was taken into custody Saturday night at 9 p.m. and faces charges for Attempted Murder in the Second Degree.  KITV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New federal rules on July 4 remove a 30% tax credit for solar projects—this may raise electricity prices and delay solar farms and rooftop systems on Oahu, Maui and Kauai. Hawaiian Electric and solar industry leaders say the change could lead to job cuts—forcing Hawaii to adjust its shift from oil to clean energy.  Hawaii Tribune-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Hana-bound lane of Hana Highway between Wailua and Nahiku remains closed today due to rocks and debris blocking the road between mile markers 21—22 near Puaa Kaa State Wayside, just west of Hanawi Falls. Crews arrived at 7:30 a.m. Sunday and are working to clear the blockage.  Hawaii News Now
  • The One Big Beautiful Bill Act now requires Hawaii to start paying part of SNAP food costs from 2028 if its payment error rate remains above 6%—lawmakers warn penalties could reach up to $109 million if the rate climbs to 10%.  Hawaii Free Press
  • Honolulu police chief Joe Logan is set to retire today and Rade Vanic will serve as interim chief—while vacancies remain in Hawaii Island and Kauai where Chief Ben Moszkowicz resigned and Chief Todd Raybuck will leave later this year. Each county has its own application process and state officials say the situation could provide opportunities for new leaders—experts urge that candidates meet high qualifications.  KITV
  • The Hawai‘i Office of Boards and Commissions is accepting applications to fill 12 advisory board spots for the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority as part of Governor Green’s plan to reshape the agency. At least one member must have expertise in Hawaiian cultural practices and board members will represent Oahu — Maui, Kauai and Hawaii Island.  Hawaii News Now
