ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Honolulu firefighters responded to a 10-story apartment building that caught fire on Saturday around 10 a.m.+ residents were evacuated as the blaze spread and crews worked to contain it.  Hawaii News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday around 10:30 p.m.—near Sewers Beach—a man in his 20s shot a 10-year-old pit bull during a verbal dispute with its owner before fleeing in a van, prompting police to launch an animal cruelty investigation as a local veterinarian later confirmed the dog died from its injuries.  Hawaii News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 48th Annual Prince Lot Hula Festival is continuing today at the Frank F. Fasi Civic Grounds as it runs from July 19 to 20, celebrating Native Hawaiian heritage. The festival honors Prince Lot Kapuāiwa for his role in reviving Hawaiian practices + its theme Mākaukau stresses standing rooted in aloha, kuleana and mālama.  KITV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Hawaii Department of Transportation is asking residents to review its draft Energy Security and Waste Reduction Plan, which proposes policy and infrastructure changes across aviation, marine and ground transportation to decarbonize transportation by 2045. State Rep. Darius Kila said the proposals could affect cost of living and access, and HDOT will host virtual sessions and accept comments until July 31.  Hawaii News Now
  • Hawaii Public Radio and PBS Hawaii will lose 20% of their funding after Congress cut $1.1 billion from CPB, forcing HPR to use reserves and start an emergency Protect HPR campaign on Wednesday and Thursday. Smaller stations like Kauai Community Radio will face an $80,000 shortfall in funds (raising concerns about future emergency alert services).  Hawaii Tribune-Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Hawaii received a one and a half million dollar grant from the Helmsley Charitable Trust to launch projects that improve healthcare for underserved communities in the islands & in American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands. UH researchers will work on programs for cardiac care, emergency services and telehealth to strengthen local care systems.  KITV
