At the Wahiawa Freshwater State Recreation Area, Hawaii Foodbank held its Kau Kau 4 Keiki program to give families 7-day meal boxes—filled with canned goods, rice, oatmeal and local staples—to help feed children during summer break.

State Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz said the federally funded program is vital for families even as it may face budget cuts and more sites are planned across the islands.

A 36 year old motorist struck a 62 year old wheelchair user crossing north on Farrington Highway west of Kaukama Street at 11:39 p.m. Thursday night and the victim died after being taken to hospital — police said speed, drugs or alcohol do not seem to be factors.
