  • On Saturday, thousands of community members joined Hawaii Foodbank’s Food Drive Day, raising donations to provide over 573,000 meals to families facing food insecurity. Volunteers + partner organizations dropped off nonperishable food and financial gifts at six collection sites on Oahu as First Hawaiian Bank matched donations up to $50,000.  Hawaii News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 23-year-old moped rider died when he lost control doing a wheelie on Kamehameha Highway near Kualoa Regional Park on Aug. 3 at 2:50 p.m.—he was not wearing a helmet and collided head-on with a bus whose driver was unharmed.  KITV

CRIME NEWS

  • Patrick Nowicke, a 44-year-old Wahiawa resident, was indicted for possessing with intent to distribute methamphetamine & illegally possessing firearms after he barricaded himself in his home during a multi-hour standoff on July 13 when law enforcement recovered over ten pounds of methamphetamine and several firearms.  Hawaii Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Actress Amy Hill, known for her roles in Lilo & Stitch and 50 First Dates, will perform her solo comedy show Amy 2.0 at the Hawaii Theatre at 8 p.m. on August 15 + she will join actor Alec Mapa for back-to-back shows in an event called Hollywood/Kine.  Hawaii News Now
  • Hilo native Makoa Kalai from Panaewa debuted on Broadway on Aug. 2 in the musical 'Mamma Mia' and will perform in an ensemble role while understudying a lead part. He began his journey with the national tour in Oct. 2023—fulfilling his lifelong dream and calling for more local representation on stage.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Honolulu selected EAH Housing to negotiate plans to redevelop 436 Ena Road—a site in its first affordable housing portfolio solicitation. City officials announced the decision on Thursday and said more details will be shared as redevelopment moves forward.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • U.S. Congressman Ed Case and Congressman James Moylan introduced a bill that would change the Jones Act to have U.S. ships built or repaired in allied shipyards in Japan and South Korea instead of in China. They say the measure will boost national security and lower high shipping costs for Hawaii and Guam—steps aimed at helping local communities and U.S. interests.  Hawaii Free Press
  • U.S. Senator Brian Schatz introduced bipartisan bills including the YIMBY Act to ease rules that hinder homeowners from adding accessory dwelling units—his move follows Gov. Green’s housing emergency proclamation and the SB3202 law that has already sped up homebuilding efforts. Grassroot advocates say these steps are key to reducing regulatory barriers that have long worsened the housing shortage.  Hawaii Free Press

  • Community members gathered at Moanalua High School Saturday for the University of Hawaii’s debut of the Red Hill Registry—this new registry tracks long-term health impacts from the 2021 fuel release into the Navy’s drinking water system and encourages enrollment even for those without current symptoms.  Hawaii News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lanikai Canoe Club won its sixth state paddling championship at Hanaka‘o‘o Beach Park in Lahaina on Saturday (during the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association regatta).
