CULTURE NEWS

  • Author Mariah Rigg discussed her debut collection, Extinction Capital of the World—released Aug. 5—in an interview that explored how climate change, colonization, and hope shape life in Hawai‘i. • Hawaiian Airlines presents the 31st Made in Hawai‘i Festival at the Hawai‘i Convention Center from Aug. 15–17 as over 500 local vendors, chef demos, fashion shows and musical performances fill the schedule—tickets cost $8 and include a sweepstakes entry for an Ala Moana Hotel stay. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A scientific expedition off the west coast of Hawaii Island completed a two-week imaging survey last month to test for a vast underground reservoir of fresh or brackish water beneath the seafloor. • The Hawaii Department of Health advises residents to avoid Kalauao Stream in Aiea-Waimalu after a cracked private sewer line at the Colonnade on the Greens released 5,485 gallons of untreated wastewater into the stream. • A report from the University of Hawaiʻi and partners finds that reaching 100% renewable energy by 2045 will require adding geothermal power because solar and wind alone do not meet Hawaiʻi’s steady energy needs. The report shows that the state currently relies on oil for most of its energy, which makes electricity rates high and the economy vulnerable to shifts in the global oil market.  Hawaii Free Press
