ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday at 7 a.m., the engine of the 29-foot boat Kamakahonu caught fire near Ala Wai Harbor and the Coast Guard, Honolulu Fire Department and nearby boaters quickly responded—evacuating all six passengers and extinguishing the fire by 7:30 a.m. KITV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 17-year-old suspect, Jasper Solberg, was indicted on murder and attempted murder charges for a May shooting in Makaha that killed one person and injured four others—he will be tried as an adult. KITV
- ➤ Honolulu police arrested a 27-year-old man who allegedly punched and headbutted two officers early this morning in Ewa Beach on Elemakule Place—both officers were treated for injuries and the man now faces charges of trespassing and assaulting law enforcement. Honolulu Star-Advertiser

- ➤ A free art installation in Waikiki honored the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings with a film projection and performance that began yesterday at the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium — part of the multi-day Renkon Project supported by Honolulu City and County and the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts following Mayor Blangiardi’s visit to Hiroshima. - ➤ The University of Hawaiʻi reached a record $734M in extramural funding for FY 2025, a $118.3M increase over last year. The record was announced on August 6 in Kakaʻako — a sign that UH keeps growing research support despite federal funding cuts — and shows strong local research efforts. Hawaii Free Press
- ➤ Honolulu Community College opened its new Advanced Manufacturing Program Facility on August 6, and it will serve as a training hub for students and active military to learn skills like welding, machining, and ship repairs—$15 million in equipment was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense to boost local industry and military readiness. - ➤ Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum launched its no-cost Aviation Pathways program on Aug. 4 to train high school juniors on Oʻahu for careers in aviation maintenance in partnership with Hawaiian Airlines, West-MEC and the Si Robin Foundation. The two-year course holds hands-on classes at the Civil Air Patrol Headquarters near Daniel K. Inouye International Airport to prepare students for an FAA airframe and powerplant license. - ➤ Scientists reported that the 30th episode of the Halemaumau eruption began early Wednesday at 1 a.m. when small fountains of lava and spattering were seen from the north vent—followed by the south vent becoming active as winds carried volcanic gases, ash, tephra and Pele's hair away from the summit.
