  • Hundreds of people lined downtown Honolulu this morning with pom poms and noise makers to start Aloha United Way's annual Workplace Giving Campaign—organizers say the event partners with more than 1400 businesses to support nearly 300 local nonprofits offering housing, food and child care.  KITV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Honolulu firefighters rescued two boaters from a 10-foot Livingston boat that began sinking before sunrise Thursday in Kaneohe Bay — the boaters held on to a flotation device for 45 minutes until rescue boats arrived and towed the vessel to Heeia Kea Boat Harbor at 5:27 a.m.  Hawaii News Now
  • A 22-year-old motorcyclist died after he lost control and crashed into a guardrail on the H-1 freeway near the Middle Street overpass in Kalihi at about 1:45 a.m. Thursday, which police said made it the 51st traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared to 26 at the same time last year.  Hawaii News Now

  • Hawaiian Electric is upgrading underground cables in downtown and Chinatown with a $183 million project and has planned lane closures—affecting one or two lanes at a time—that will slow traffic until late December.  Hawaii News Now

  • Former Punahou girls basketball coach Dwayne Yuen was sentenced on Aug. 14 to over 33 years in prison with a life of probation for child exploitation and harassment against 10 victims over nearly two decades.  KITV

  • Hawaii P-20 Partnerships for Education will launch free virtual financial aid workshops on Zoom on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. beginning August 20 through October—helping families learn how to access over $150 billion in grants, loans and scholarships for high school students planning college.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Green announced on August 13 that 12 people were appointed to the new Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority board after the previous board resigned, calling for a fresh approach in tourism management. The board members, who come from tourism, labor, and cultural groups, now await state Senate confirmation—ensuring that future decisions will balance economic growth with community benefit.  Hawaii Free Press
  • The Hawaii State Judiciary warned Honolulu residents that scammers are exploiting the mailing of 330,000 jury questionnaires for potential 2026 service—impersonating court officials and pressuring victims to pay fines immediately.
