ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 57-year-old man fell off a Kuhio Avenue sidewalk near Royal Hawaiian Avenue in Waikiki on Friday at 4 p.m.—he was struck by an eastbound transit bus and taken to a hospital where his condition worsened to critical—while the bus operator remained uninjured.  Hawaii News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Fred Ulu-Perry, 28, was arrested on Aug. 14 after allegedly attacking a St. Louis football coach during a Farrington scrimmage on Aug. 2 and was charged with second-degree assault on Aug. 16—his bail was set at $25,000.  KITV
  • Honolulu police and the state Department of Law Enforcement held a gun buyback event in Wai‘anae on Friday — a measure to address a recent rise in gun crimes on Oahu’s west side.  KITV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A UHERO study reported on August 12 found that Hawaii’s tourism-driven economy pays higher wages to low and middle-income workers while offering fewer high-paying jobs, which lowers the state’s income gap — in 2023, the Gini coefficient was 0.42. This pattern has kept income inequality lower in Hawaii compared to other states.  Hawaii Free Press
