ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 20-year-old motorcyclist was critically injured on Sunday afternoon on Farrington Highway in Waianae when she lost control and hit a raised concrete curb east of Ala Akau Street, and Emergency Medical Services transported her to hospital as investigators examined speed as a factor and possible substance use.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • A man in his 30s was pulled unconscious from Waikiki waters near Kalia Road on Sunday at about 5 p.m. and was rescued by bystanders who started CPR before paramedics arrived—he remains in critical condition after advanced treatment in a hospital.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • A 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital in critical condition after she lost control of her motorcycle and hit a raised concrete curb on Farrington Hwy on Sunday afternoon—officials said she was not wearing her helmet and speed may have been a factor.  KITV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Hawaii’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 2.7% in July from 2.8% in June—its lowest level since before COVID-19. The state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism reported a labor force of 689,050 with 669,750 employed and 19,300 unemployed, and unemployment rates ranged from 2.3% in Kauai to 3.1% in Hawaii County.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A WalletHub study ranked six Hawaii community colleges using 18 indicators of cost and quality—Kauai Community College led with a score of 66.5 while Windward Community College trailed at 56.82.  Hawaii Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nimitz Highway will see 24-hour closures through 2030—city officials say the change will allow for essential maintenance and improved safety for Leeward Oahu drivers.  Hawaii News Now
  • One lane on each side of Nimitz Highway is closed round the clock today for a major rail project — the closures will run for five years and affect busy downtown traffic. Construction on the guideway and stations will also impact Iwilei Road — drivers should plan for alternate routes.  KITV

  • Chef Lance Kosaka overhauls Basalt Waikīkī's menu to highlight homegrown flavors and rolls out a 20% kama‘āina discount available until the end of August—dishes include guava baby back ribs and other local specialties that promise a fresh taste in the tourist district.  Honolulu Magazine
