CRIME NEWS

  • Honolulu police investigated a disturbing death in Kapolei after human remains were found dismembered and burnt beyond recognition Tuesday morning—officials opened an unattended death case.  KITV
  • On Thursday, a Maui judge refused to drop the case against Lahaina wildfire survivor Sekonaia Takafua, who faces second-degree murder charges for killing surfer Shawn Lewis in Waikapu last September and also faces previous weapons and drug counts—his defense argued that his trial rights were hurt and asked for lower bail while the judge set a hearing on the grand jury review for Sept 2.  Hawaii News Now
  • Officials have opened an arson investigation for a Kunia wildfire that burned 600 acres and is 70% contained — it is the seventh fire reported in the area in a little over a week.  Hawaii News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 43rd Okinawan Festival takes place at the Hawai‘i Convention Center on Saturday, Aug. 30 and Sunday, Aug. 31—over 40,000 people will enjoy food, music, dance and cultural exhibits while celebrating 125 years of Okinawan immigration and welcoming the Governor of Okinawa with 40 municipal mayors in attendance.  Honolulu Magazine
  • A Hui Hou Tribute concert at the Waikiki Shell will honor late island music legend Fiji on Sept. 13 with live performances by over 20 artists — tickets are available today at 10 a.m. on a limited per email basis.  Hawaii News Now

  • Waikiki Aquarium in Honolulu is accepting illegal aquatic animals from the public — a new policy intended to protect marine life and stop invasive species from harming local ecosystems.  KITV
