- ➤ Hawaii Island police are asking the public to help find Shawndell Cortez and her 7-year-old daughter from Kailua-Kona, who were last seen on August 3 at about 12 p.m.—Cortez is considered endangered due to a medical condition. Hawaii News Now

- ➤ A federal law called aviation cabotage stops foreign airlines from offering tickets between US cities—raising airfares for Hawai‘i residents and limiting the islands’ chance to become a global air hub. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey expect lava fountaining to begin between now and Monday, Aug. 25—marking Kilauea’s 31st eruption episode. Lava is already bubbling from a vent and may soon intensify as the eruption continues. Hawaii News Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Green received a letter from the Army suggesting a land exchange for its training areas & he said no official talks have begun as the Army's lease for Pohakuloa expires in 2029 and future deals must return state lands. The state will launch a public website at the end of August to share documents and updates. Hawaii News Now
- ➤ The U.S. Army sent a letter to Governor Green emphasizing the need to finalize a new framework for military land leases by the end of this year as the Army stresses that access to training lands is vital for national security. Governor Green said his office will work to secure fair terms—including land returns, cleanup of training areas, and opportunities for more Native Hawaiian homeownership—as discussions with federal leaders continue.
