ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An early morning fire in Aina Haina destroyed two homes and left long-time residents with little as crews extinguished the flames in just over three hours—investigators continue to determine the cause.  KITV
  • A 50-year-old man is in critical condition after a double hit-and-run on Nimitz Highway when two unidentified motorists struck him while he was walking, police said.  Hawaii News Now
  • Oahu has seen a rise in traffic deaths as local officials and the Honolulu Police Department launched their Safer Roads Together campaign—an effort to urge safer driving practices on the island— to address the alarming trend.  KITV

  • A 50-year-old man was critically injured after being hit by two hit-and-run vehicles early Thursday morning at 12:03 a.m. on Nimitz Hwy in Kalihi—police are investigating the incidents.  KITV

  • Local I‘a is hosting its second fish fry on Labor Day Monday, Sept 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. in Kaimukī—offering $12 plates of fried ta‘ape with rice and salad or ready-to-cook fish to help reduce invasive snappers on local reefs, with more events planned in the future.  Honolulu Magazine
  • The 2025 Hale ‘Aina Gala will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at The Royal Hawaiian in Waikīkī, where guests will enjoy Moroccan-themed entertainment, food & drinks from award-winning restaurants, and VIP red carpet access.  Honolulu Magazine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 100 Department of Hawaiian Home Lands beneficiaries were chosen by lottery Saturday to buy new homestead houses in Kapolei built by Gentry Homes — the homes will be available early next year and cost at least $498,000.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • A group of cruise ship operators and tour companies have filed a federal lawsuit to block Hawaii’s new 11% tax — which includes a 3% county surcharge and a 0.75% Green Fee — arguing it violates the Constitution’s Tonnage Clause and will raise costs for families. The suit claims that the added fees will hurt the industry by making popular cruise itineraries more expensive.  Hawaii News Now

  • Honolulu’s guide to Labor Day weekend shows a mix of fun events. Today, the Rainbow Wāhine volleyball classic plays at SimpliFi Arena and Phil Rosenthal speaks at Hawai‘i Theatre Center, while later the ‘Ewa Carnival, Hawai‘i Swim Show, beach movie in Waikīkī, a play at Kumu Kahua Theatre, WWII commemorations, a summer concert at Waimea Valley, an underwater exhibit at the Bishop Museum, and a Pet ’n’ Wild event in Kapolei offer choices for sports, art, and family fun — all running through Sept. 3.  Honolulu Magazine
