ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Waikiki penthouse fire caused by unattended cooking injured an 80-year-old man who was taken to hospital and caused about $105,000 in damage—a man in his 20s experienced smoke inhalation but refused treatment.  KITV

CRIME NEWS

  • Police in Honolulu barricaded the home of 70-year-old Antonio Vierra on Friday to arrest him for starting a fire at Puaena Point Beach Park after he was released on $50,000 bail for the Kunia Road brush fire.  KITV
  • Police reported that two men remain at large after they allegedly assaulted a 47-year-old man by brandishing a gun, firing a shot into the ground and hitting him on Saturday night in Waialua—EMS treated him for injuries even though he refused hospital transport.  KITV

FINANCE NEWS

  • The One Big Beautiful Bill Act allows workers in tipping jobs to exclude up to $25,000 of tips from their income through 2028—workers earning above set income thresholds see their deduction reduced and professionals in non-tipping fields do not qualify. Employers must report all qualified tips correctly to ensure the deduction applies as intended.  Hawaii Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials said that the Honolulu Department of Facility Maintenance will reopen the Kaelepulu Stream mouth at Kailua Bay starting Tuesday — a project planned to remove the sand plug at Kailua Beach Park and allow a long exchange of fresh and ocean water. An excavator will remain on site until the work is complete by Sept. 24, and beachgoers are urged to keep clear of the area due to potential strong currents.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

SPORTS NEWS

  • Hawaii’s Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele made his collegiate debut for Cal Berkeley on Saturday, completing 20 of 30 passes for 234 yards and throwing three touchdowns in a 34-15 win over Oregon State—he became the first true freshman to start a season opener for Cal.  Hawaii News Now
