CRIME NEWS

  • The Honolulu Police Department arrested a 42-year-old U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer in Kapolei Monday morning—he allegedly showed the butt of a gun during a verbal argument with a 33-year-old woman and now faces terroristic threatening charges.  KITV
  • A 24-year-old woman was hospitalized after being shot on Gannet Avenue in Ewa Beach tonight and police opened an attempted murder investigation at Iroquois Point—Honolulu EMS responded after 8 p.m. and treated her for gunshot wounds.  KITV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 27-acre culturally significant shoreline between Kona and Kohala is now permanently protected when the land is taken over by Nā ‘Ōiwi O Pu‘uanahulu for community stewardship—ending planned resort development. Public and private support provided $7.7 million in funding—helping preserve ocean health and cultural heritage.  Hawaii News Now
  • Today, Kilauea’s summit began a new eruptive episode when lava fountains reached 500 feet in Halemaumau crater—sending a plume up to 20,000 feet above sea level, according to the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The event started at 6:35 a.m. and remains contained within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park with officials warning that vog may affect areas to the south and west of the summit.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • At 6:35 a.m. today, episode 32 of the Kilauea eruption began in Halemaʻumaʻu crater with lava fountains reaching 500 feet high. Winds from the northeast are expected to push high volcanic gas levels southwest of the summit while the eruption remains confined to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  Hawaii Tribune-Herald
  • Kilauea’s 32nd episode began Tuesday at 6:35 a.m. after low-level activity started at 12:43 a.m.—USGS officials reported cyclic overflows producing 10-15 ft tall fountains, with durations that varied throughout the early morning.  KITV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll is expected to return to Hawaii later this month to discuss military leased lands with Governor Green, though his visit has not been officially confirmed. More than 40 Native Hawaiian groups signed a joint statement warning against fast-tracking new leases—stressing the need for proper representation to protect native claims.  Hawaii News Now
  • Beginning tonight, lanes bound for Kaneohe on Likelike Highway will close on weeknights from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.—DOT is installing rods at Wilson Tunnel to reduce emergency closures and drivers should use Pali Highway and H3 as alternate routes until Oct. 31, weather permitting.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
