COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jabbawockeez donated $65,000 to the Liliʻuokalani Trust to fund a renovated youth center in Honolulu — the 8-story center now has a dance studio, theatre, gym, and health center — that opened this summer and will start programs in October.  Hawaii News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • A Hawaii County woman was charged with labor trafficking on Hawaii Island plus authorities said the investigation is ongoing.  Hawaii News Now
  • Honolulu police launched a murder investigation Thursday afternoon at a Halawa home on Ha’aheo Place after finding an adult female victim with blunt force trauma—officials have not yet made any arrests.  Hawaii News Now
  • Honolulu police investigated a potential murder at a Halawa home on Thursday—after a call came in shortly after 11 a.m.—and found an adult female victim who suffered blunt force trauma; no arrests have been made.  KITV
  • Honolulu—The Hawaii Attorney General charged Terri Ann Otani, 70, with four counts of false name contribution in 2020 and set her arraignment for September 8 at 8:30 a.m.—the offense is a Class C felony carrying a penalty of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.  Hawaii Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Virginia-based nonprofit group Students For Fair Admissions launched a website against the Kamehameha Schools admissions policy—calling it unlawful and discriminatory—and said it will take the matter to court. Local native Hawaiian leaders warned that a legal challenge may threaten the nearly 140-year legacy of the school—urging the community to protect its educational mission.  KITV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Hawaii are told to prepare for Hurricane Kiko, which the National Weather Service predicts will remain at hurricane strength into early next week with heavy rain, high surf and strong winds. Minor coastal flooding is expected during the high tide through Sunday afternoon along low lying coastal areas—residents are urged to avoid flooded roads.  KITV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Navy and National Park Service began removing two World War II-era mooring platforms from USS Arizona on Wednesday in Pearl Harbor—removal work is expected to continue.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • OHA started a program called Access to Home Ownership that helps Native Hawaiians buy a house with lower down payments and less mortgage insurance—this program is part of the Mana i Mauli Ola plan to expand homeownership opportunities amid high home prices.  Hawaii Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors football team will host the Sam Houston Bearcats on Saturday at Clarence T.C. Ching Complex as they try to recover from a 40-6 loss to Arizona and address concerns over starting quarterback Micah Alejado’s re-injured ankle from the Wildcats game—he did not practice this week.  Hawaii News Now
