ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash on Fort Barrette Road Monday at 3:45 p.m. left a 48-year-old bicyclist in critical condition after she was hit by a 55-year-old driver — officials said she was not wearing a helmet and was taken to a nearby hospital while the driver remained uninjured with speed, alcohol, and drugs not believed to be factors.  KITV
  • On Monday afternoon at around 5:24 p.m. on Farrington Highway, a 28-year-old motorcyclist died after his left turn into Mokuleia Beach Park led to a collision with a northbound vehicle—police say the incident brings Oahu’s traffic fatalities to 60 this year.  Hawaii News Now
  • A 28-year-old motorcyclist died after his motorcycle hit a car on Farrington Hwy in Waialua Monday at 5:24 p.m.—Police said his high speed caused the crash and marked Oahu’s 60th traffic death this year.  KITV

CRIME NEWS

  • David Borges of Koloa, alleged leader of a violent Kauai drug trafficking ring, was sentenced on Sept. 4 to 29 years in federal prison — he pleaded guilty to extortion, conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, carrying a firearm during drug trafficking, and he has been in custody since March 2023.  Hawaii News Now
  • Honolulu Police arrested 19-year-old Kaison K. Kaholo on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder and firearm offenses after shots were fired at Zablan Beach early Saturday morning, and a 17-year-old victim later had his brain death determined as the case was reclassified to murder with bail set at $500,000+ investigators are probing the incident.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • Honolulu Police reported a hit and run on Monday night when a 60 year old pedestrian was struck by an unknown vehicle on Kawaihao Street near Kamani Street in Kakaako—EMS transported the victim to hospital in serious condition while investigators work to determine if factors like speed, alcohol or drugs contributed.  Hawaii News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Starting Oct. 1, Hawaii will charge a new $250 visa fee for international travelers from countries not in the Visa Waiver Program such as India, China and Mexico—this fee adds a challenge as the tourism sector works to recover from the pandemic.  KITV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Honolulu Ocean Safety Department said 30 rescues and 615 preventive actions took place at Kailua, Sandy Beach and Makapu’u after an unusual swell from Kiko made 'freight train' waves at Kailua Beach—Sandy Beach was the busiest—and surfers waited for the rare conditions.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Josh Green signed bills SB66 and SB15 to cut permit delays in new home construction. SB66, effective July 1, will let builders with complete applications get expedited permits if counties take more than 60 days - and SB15 narrows the definition of historic property to skip unnecessary review - a change that could speed up housing projects.  Hawaii Free Press
  • The Honolulu Police Department launched a new public affairs webpage today that offers arrest logs, traffic updates, and news releases to boost transparency. The user-friendly site displays investigative case highlights and a 24-hour log of calls for service for residents seeking timely information.  Hawaii News Now
