  • The Honolulu community gardening program is celebrating 50 years with a free event running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Foster Botanical Garden — the event marks a milestone in local community growth.  Hawaii News Now
  • Today, the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation celebrates the 50th anniversary of its free community gardening program at Foster Botanical Garden from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring educational displays, demonstrations, tours, and food (the event uses the 'keep growing' theme) as city officials also declare September as Honolulu Community Gardening Month.  Hawaii News Now

  • Meta apologized to Aiea photographer Kathy Tanita Ohama—who takes photos at karate tournaments—after wrongly locking her Facebook and Instagram accounts because of a guideline error, and her accounts are restored today; however, Wahiawa resident Edelyn Cacayurin is still waiting for a reply.  Hawaii News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Residents in West Oahu called for an end to gun violence after 17-year-old Kamakea Iaea was caught in a shootout near Zablan Beach in Nanakuli while heading out camping Saturday morning—two 19-year-old suspects were charged with attempted murder and his family said his organs were donated after he was taken off life support.  Hawaii News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Officials began road closures and parking restrictions Friday night as they set up a sold-out tribute concert honoring reggae star Fiji at Waikīkī Shell and Kapiʻolani Park. Nearly 100 artists — including J Boog, Maoli and Common Kings — will perform at the free event today.  KITV
  • Today, Oahu-based designer Lydia Querian debuts her new collection at New York Fashion Week in a sold-out show. The collection features hand-woven textiles from the Philippines made by indigenous Iranun weavers — her work supports native artisans and uplifts cultural traditions.  Hawaii News Now
  • More than 100 locals rallied today at the state Capitol to support Kamehameha Schools' century-old admissions policy that preserves the legacy of Bernice Pauahi Bishop—participants warned that proposed changes by Students for Fair Admissions could threaten Native Hawaiian rights.  KITV
  • AIA Honolulu’s CANstruction competition is celebrating its 20th anniversary at Kahala Mall—an event that uses recycled cans to create art and draw local attention.  Hawaii News Now
  • Milo Maharlika, a former Ewa Beach resident, plays Demi—a 600-year-old ghost—in Disney’s new Vampirina: Teenage Vampire show that debuted Friday on the Disney Channel. The 12-year-old actor appears in all 16 episodes, and the season will stream on Disney+ starting Oct. 15.  Hawaii News Now

  • UH Hawaii Hilo's Center for Maunakea Stewardship is doing an environmental assessment—planning to replace underground fuel tanks on Maunakea with a modern above ground system.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A salvage crew is working at the USS Arizona Memorial to remove unstable concrete platforms that began collapsing in December while using a large crane and Navy divers to install anchors and buoys for safety. The memorial is closed to visitors during the operation—crew members plan to finish by the end of September to protect the final resting place for over 900 fallen sailors and Marines.  Hawaii News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors will face the Portland State Vikings on homecoming weekend at 6 p.m. at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex—coach Timmy Chang said the team is riding a win against Sam Houston and is set to welcome UH alums back.  Hawaii News Now
