COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Aloha Stadium Swap Meet, which has served locals for 46 years, will move on Oct. 15 from its historic location to a new site in the stadium parking lot in Halawa — a change confirmed by Samantha Spain of the Stadium Authority that aims to offer improved facilities.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • Fourteen Vietnam veterans will fly to Washington D.C. on an all expense paid trip by Hawaiian Islands Honor Flight + Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines sponsor the journey to visit the Vietnam Memorial Wall and other landmarks. They will return to Honolulu for a homecoming ceremony on Oct 8 to honor their service.  Hawaii News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Over the weekend and early this morning, Honolulu lifeguards responded to several rescues and medical emergencies as high surf produced 10–15 ft waves along north- and west-facing shores; an off-duty lifeguard performed CPR at Kaneohe Sandbar until emergency teams arrived. Lifeguards also aided a hiker near Kaena Point, rescued two people from Ke Iki Beach, saved a snorkeling man at Hanauma Bay, and assisted a vessel at Pokai Bay (with over 2,700 preventative actions and 25 rescues recorded on the North Shore).  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • A man in his 70s was taken to an emergency room at Hanauma Bay on Sunday morning after inhaling water and receiving advanced life support.  KITV

  • More than 150 golfers competed on Saturday at Waikele Country Club in the 3rd Philippine Airlines USA Cup—Bong Tan Memorial Tournament, which honored the company’s late president and raised money for the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii Foundation’s scholarship and leadership programs. Philippine Airlines, now 84 years old and offering nonstop flights from Honolulu to Manila, hosted its first charity event in Hawaii.  Hawaii News Now

  • The Kapaemahu ceremony in Waikiki—marking the kickoff of Honolulu Pride celebrations—took place Sunday morning to officially launch Pride Month in Honolulu.  Hawaii News Now
  • Israeli musician Idan Raichel will make his Hawaii debut with his show 'Piano Songs' at Blue Note Hawaii in Waikiki on Oct. 8, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and the show starting at 7 p.m.—he and multi award-winning Henry Kapono performed a new song they wrote together on Sunrise, highlighting a message of hope and unity as ticket prices range from $55 to $100.  Hawaii News Now

  • University of Hawaii enrollment reached 51,411 this fall—its highest total in eight years as campuses like Manoa and West Oahu showed steady gains.   • UH President Wendy Hensel is reimagining higher education for the AI era by blending technical skills with human-centered learning—she is launching flexible digital initiatives with advisor Guy Kawasaki and updating UH course delivery to meet evolving career needs.  Hawaii Business

  • City and state will start a new data-driven plan in January to reduce homelessness by using police and park drone images to track activity across Oahu—officials expect the detailed data to guide resource use.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
