BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, The Pig & the Lady 2.0 soft-opens in Kaimukī at 3650 Wai‘alae Ave with a limited menu for lunch and dinner— the same team has returned with both old favorites and new dishes. The restaurant will have its grand opening on Oct 21.  Honolulu Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Hawaii and the Hawaii State Department of Education launched Direct2UH, a new program that simplifies college admissions for public high school seniors by offering direct acceptance—without a traditional application—based on grade point averages. The initiative was introduced Oct. 13 at a Kauai High School pep rally and a Farrington High School news conference, and every public high school senior will soon receive an official acceptance letter.  Hawaii News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Hawaii Department of Health fined Wailehua I, LLC $2.4 million for discharging soil and construction materials into wetlands at a Kaneʻohe property (since 2015) and ordered the firm to remove the material and stop further discharges. The order gives the company (20 days to contest) the violation.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oahu bus drivers, mechanics and office workers have worked without a contract for nearly four months as wage and work condition disputes continue. Oahu Transit Services has warned riders to prepare for a possible work stoppage — though union officials have stated that a strike is not planned as talks are set to resume.  KITV
  • Honolulu bus drivers and Oahu Transit Services management have stalled contract negotiations over pay differences—union leaders say driver wages lag behind those in other cities given Hawaii's high cost of living. Talks remain ongoing as both sides work to reach a fair agreement.  KITV
  • Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services announced TheBus will update several routes on October 16 to support the Skyline expansion — the changes include new lines that replace discontinued service and add stops to serve Māpunapuna, Downtown, Kakaʻako, Ala Moana, and UH Mānoa.  KITV
  • Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation CEO Lori Kahikina and City Council member Tyler Dos Santos-Tam explained that Skyline’s second rail segment from Halawa to Middle Street launches this week with free rides starting Oct.16—officials said the milestone follows decades of planning and paves the way for extending the line to Kakaako and eventually Ala Moana once additional funds are approved.  Hawaii News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Authorities reported that counterfeit pills mixing bromazolam and fentanyl have caused a record number of overdose deaths on Oahu this year. Experts warn that the deadly combination may put teens and other users at risk—especially as the drug is sold online and looks like real Xanax.  Hawaii News Now
  • Meadow Gold Dairy voluntarily recalled 70,000 half-pint units of chocolate milk distributed to schools and institutions across Hawaii due to potential quality control issues — the recalled product, marked 'OCT 16', was delivered on Sept. 29. State health officials advised that if it looks, smells, or tastes unusual, it should not be consumed.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • Nearly 2,000 Kaiser Permanente workers in Hawaii joined tens of thousands nationwide in a five-day strike that began Tuesday morning at 7 a.m.—they are picketing at several facilities daily to protest unsafe staffing, low wages, and burnout as they fight for better care until Oct 19.  Hawaii News Now
  • Dozens attended a bowling fundraiser in Honolulu to support 19-year-old Khailer Eli—who will undergo his third major open-heart surgery later this month at Stanford Children's Medical Center. The event raised over $4,500 toward his family's $15,000 goal to help cover high medical expenses—a sign of strong local backing.  Hawaii News Now
