CULTURE NEWS

  • Today at the FilCom Center in Waipahu, Parangal Dance Company holds a workshop from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Flores Ballroom where master artist Manang Jenny leads training in Maguindanaon and Kalinga dances—a practice passed down by indigenous communities from Zamboanga to the Cordilleras. On Saturday, Oct. 18th, the ADHIKA: Philippine Dance Showcase at the Casamina-Flores Ballroom will feature authentic performances with tickets at $30 regular and $125 VIP—a celebration of Filipino cultural heritage.  Hawaii News Now
  • At 83, Miss Brandy Lee is a veteran drag performer who has spent 60 years entertaining in Hawaii and fighting for equal rights. She works with foster families by day and performs on stage by night while finishing her memoir—her career opened doors for the queer community.  Hawaii News Now

  • Honolulu Ocean Safety warned beachgoers Thursday morning after box jellyfish were seen at Waikiki and Maili Beach — swimmers should check with lifeguards for updated conditions.  Hawaii News Now

  • Honolulu unveiled Skyline's second segment on Oct 16—commuters are already using the new line as part of efforts to improve transit. The project marks a key update in public transportation services for the city.  KITV
  • Nearly 40 Native Hawaiian groups are asking the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to oppose new military land leases over 39,000 acres and live-fire training, following county council resolutions against desecration of sacred ‘āina (which includes the Pōhakuloa Training Area). OHA will review their request at a board meeting in Hilo on November 6.  Hawaii News Now
  • A man in a black shirt with unfamiliar logos went door-to-door in Ewa Beach to test tap water and was turned away by residents after his ID did not match Board of Water Supply standards on Wednesday. The board said it filed a police report—warns residents to call 8087485000 to verify any tester at their door.  Hawaii News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children received a strike notice from Hawaii Teamsters & Allied Workers, Local 996, for a round-the-clock strike set to begin at 7 a.m. today — the center has secured a temporary workforce to keep patient care uninterrupted while contract negotiations continue.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • On Thursday, the state Department of Health confirmed that 15 people reported stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting after four Oahu school facilities received recalled Meadow Gold chocolate milk on Sept. 29. Nearly 70,000 units were sent to almost 200 state schools — and laboratory tests are underway to look for bacterial toxins while no food safety violations have been found.  Hawaii News Now
