ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Waianae family is mourning the death of 17-year-old Maikah Hampp-Iriarte, who died in a fishing accident near Kaena Point over the weekend when a wave swept him away as he fished with his friend—leaving loved ones and the local community heartbroken.  Hawaii News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local entrepreneurs Zak Noyle and Kimo Kennedy are building Eleven17 Creative, a full-service agency that works with national brands to keep local talent at home— the agency will offer mentorship programs, internships and jobs to help young creatives grow in Hawai‘i.  KITV
  • Paradise Cove in Ko Olina, which has hosted a luau for 47 years, will hold its final event on New Year’s Eve. James Campbell Company will redevelop the venue into a new $135 million dining, retail, and entertainment complex opening by early 2027—PC Services reported 172 employees will lose their jobs while the project is expected to create about 484 new positions.  Hawaii News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hawaii public schools served bussin' volcano bowls for National Farm to School Month using over 4,300 lbs of local beef, 6,300 lbs of lettuce, and 4,400 lbs of tomatoes at 95 schools. The meal supported the Department of Education’s farm-to-school initiative under Act 175 to improve student health and assist local farmers — a statewide effort that continues to incorporate fresh produce.  KITV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast above-normal rainfall through early spring with a weak La Nina in effect for the wet season running from October through April. Residents are advised to avoid driving on roads with fast flowing water and walking across flooded streams—prepare an evacuation plan in case of flooding.  Hawaii News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Office of Hawaiian Affairs approved $6.1 million in emergency funding — to help Native Hawaiian families during the federal government shutdown, a move aimed at providing urgent support amid the crisis.  KITV
  • The Office of Hawaiian Affairs board approved $6.1M in emergency funding to help Native Hawaiians impacted by the federal government shutdown and the suspension of SNAP benefits after November 1. The funds will be distributed as direct cash payments for SNAP recipients not covered by the governor’s relief plan and federal employees out of work since October 1 — more details will be announced by early November.  Hawaii News Now
  • USDA announced that funding for Hawaii's WIC program will continue during the government shutdown—supporting over 26,000 individuals each month.  KITV
  • Hawaii is facing a food crisis as SNAP benefits expired and federal workers missed paychecks, leaving tens of thousands of households at risk after the state lost $60 million monthly aid for 170,000 recipients; food banks are struggling to fill the gap (state officials plan to offer short-term housing assistance to eligible families).  Hawaii News Now

  • David, a 12-year-old Waipahu boy in remission after lymphoma treatment, met famous YouTuber Mr. Beast at Disneyland during the Frightfully Fun Wish event hosted by Make-A-Wish Hawaii over the weekend—he starred in re-creations of Mr. Beast's videos and shared his homemade cookies made with Feastables chocolate.  Hawaii News Now
