COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hawaiian Electric Company crews repaired an electrical vault in Waikiki that left about 1,000 people without power and several traffic signals down until restoration at 7 p.m.—Honolulu police managed traffic at key intersections on Ala Moana Boulevard and Kalakaua Avenue.  Hawaii News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A head-on car crash last week on Daniel K. Inouye Highway killed a Hawaii Island woman and her newborn granddaughter, and police said reckless driving and speeding on Saddle Road and Queen Kaahumanu Highway—where drivers exceeded safe limits—have intensified calls for safer roads.  Hawaii News Now

  • Hawaiian Airlines ended a 95-year tradition when a pilot made the final transmission using the HA callsign at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on Wednesday morning, and flight 866 from Pago Pago landed in Honolulu before 6 a.m.—employees gathered to mark the historic moment as new CEO Diana Birkett Rakow began her first day at the helm.  KITV

  • Honolulu venues are growing the natural wine movement by offering low-intervention wines that focus on sustainability—local spots like Silver Lining Wine Bar, Fête and Kaimukī Storeroom at The Curb provide unique flavors from ancient varietals to international picks.  Honolulu Magazine
  • Honolulu residents can enjoy a weekend of cultural events with a regatta at Waikiki Yacht Club on Nov. 1, an art exhibition at Aupuni Space through Dec. 6, a free tree giveaway at Waimea Valley on Nov. 1, and a craft beer festival at Wai Kai in ‘Ewa Beach. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Honolulu Ocean Safety Department will hire part-time on-call beach lifeguards. Applicants must register at Ala Moana Beach Park Ocean Safety Training Center on Nov 14-15 from 8 to 10 a.m. and pass a physical exam on Nov 21 or Nov 22 with interviews on Nov 25 (the exam tests running, swimming and board paddling).  Hawaii News Now
  • Hawaii earned an F for home affordability as high prices and few new-home permits squeeze the market. Gov. Green declared a state emergency — signed House Bill 420 to cut repair delays — and his measures aim to increase affordable housing supply.  Hawaii Free Press
  • Today, Governor Josh Green announced the Hawaiʻi Relief Program to help needy families with children apply for rent and utility assistance as federal SNAP benefits will be suspended on Saturday—this will include $100 million in federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funding and $2 million for the Hawaii Food Bank to support low-income households amid the shutdown.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Blood Bank of Hawaii is asking for more blood donors after many road crashes have left hospitals with only a half-day supply of O negative blood—staff say the low supply could delay emergency care and needed surgeries for injured residents.  KITV

  • The Warriors from Kamehameha Maui won the Maui Interscholastic League—earning the team the fourth seed and a first round bye in the tournament.  Hawaii News Now
