COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday morning, hundreds of cars gathered at Waipio Soccer Complex as Hawaii Foodbank hosted an emergency food distribution event to assist furloughed federal workers, active-duty military households, and those awaiting SNAP benefits—an effort following Gov. Josh Green’s new relief programs. Local officials, including Rep. Jill Tokuda and Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke, said the event underscored the urgent need for food assistance in the community.  Hawaii News Now

  • Loved ones held a sign to honor 19-year-old Tehya Mahelona who died in a crash while walking to work and urged drivers to be more cautious.  Hawaii News Now
  • Family members gathered along Farrington Highway in Nanankuli Friday morning to honor 19-year-old Tehya Mahelona, a Starbucks employee killed in a Tuesday morning crash while walking to work—police said speed contributed to the incident and the investigation is ongoing.  Hawaii News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hawaii Fashion Show will take place on Nov. 2 at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu—doors open at 5 p.m. for a fashion event that runs from 6 to 8 p.m. with a model search from 8 to 10 p.m., where designers from both local and international backgrounds will present their new collections.  Hawaii News Now
  • Hawaii and Okinawa share many similarities—clear weather, lush terrain and a love for unique food and fashion—that are seen in Naha City where local stores offer Spam musubis, Spam clothing and fusion dishes like taco rice. Part-time Hawaii resident Chip O’Neill said his visit showed a creative mix of American and local tastes.  Hawaii News Now
  • Honolulu is seeing a new wave of Japanese eateries that blend traditional dishes with creative twists—serving handcrafted matcha drinks and innovative musubi that break from the typical teishoku menus. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Preliminary numbers from DBEDT show that in September, 690,858 visitors came to Hawaii—2.5% fewer than last year—while daily spending rose 11.3% to $270, boosting total spending 8.1% to $1.54 billion (not adjusted for inflation). Air and cruise arrivals shifted as fewer visitors came from the U.S. West while numbers from Japan grew 8.6%.  Hawaii Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Josh Green announced Thursday that the state will provide $42.2 million to pay each of the 161,400 residents $250 to replace federal SNAP benefits that expire today due to the shutdown. A family of three will get $750 by November 14—the amount is below the usual SNAP spending.  Hawaii Tribune-Herald
  • Safety cameras in 10 Downtown Honolulu intersections will begin issuing citations today for red-light running and speeding violations, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation. The system, which issued over 500,000 warnings since March+ will capture violations and mail citations to vehicle owners within 10 days, with fines directed to a designated enforcement fund.  KITV

HEALTH NEWS

  • AARP’s report shows one in four Hawaii adults care for family members without pay, with their efforts valued at $2.6 billion per year (60 percent juggle full- or part-time jobs while caregiving). The report calls for policymakers to support caregivers with tax credits and paid family leave.  Hawaii News Now
  • Two new deaths and seven more illnesses were reported in Hawaii as part of a listeria outbreak linked to recalled pasta meals sold in grocery stores in several states. Officials said the outbreak began in August 2024—investigators traced it to precooked pasta from Nate’s Fine Foods and advised consumers to check for recalled products.  Hawaii News Now

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Frolic recapped the record number of new restaurants featured in October (twice as many as in August and September), highlighting spots that opened in late summer and early fall across Honolulu. The list covers a range from modern Vietnamese lunch houses to coffee shops and New Zealand-style ice cream (offering diverse menus for local diners).  Honolulu Magazine

SPORTS NEWS

  • Hawai‘i high schools will hold their first surfing championship when the HHSAA Surfing State Tournament debuts on Maui on May 1 and 2. All five high school athletic leagues sponsor the event, which features girls and boys shortboard championships & state funding of $685,870 per season to support future careers in the sport.  Honolulu Magazine
