COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Last year, 941 donors raised $158,280 for Give Big Hawai‘i to support 112 local organizations that ran projects like coral restoration, food distribution, and community support services. The funds helped pay for activities such as water tests, learning supplies, and free events and will guide future nonprofit programs.  Honolulu Magazine

CRIME NEWS

  • The Honolulu Police Department will conduct impaired driver checkpoints on Oahu at unannounced times and locations from November 1 to December 31 (the effort aims to remind drivers to stay sober and reduce traffic injuries).  KITV

CULTURE NEWS

  • On November 1, locals in Lihue gathered to honor beloved Kumu Hula Leināʻala Pavao-Jardin. Family, friends and haumāna from across the islands shared songs and hula performances—remembering her lasting cultural influence.  KITV
  • Kristian Lei is hosting a benefit concert at the Hawaii Theatre on Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m.—the event features composer Ryan Cayabyab and his singers while celebrating 21 years of Honolulu Broadway Babies and supporting inclusive arts education for people with disabilities.  Hawaii News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Oahu’s North Shore faced long-term beach loss from winter swells as residents pushed for immediate erosion solutions. Hawaii Sea Grant and North Shore Community and Trust held their first community meeting on November 1 to discuss a new Beach Management Plan with proposals like dune restoration — sand management and beach maintenance.  KITV
  • Volunteers gathered at Waimea Bay on November 1 to remove over 1,000 pounds of trash and debris—such as tires, tents, bottles, cans and an old urn—in preparation for the winter swells. Organizers said the cleanup reset the area ahead of the seasonal weather changes.  KITV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Glenn Wakai said his adoption from Okinawa more than 50 years ago showed him the value of family and led him to help change Japan's adoption policies. After his wife Miki helped him reunite with his birth mother, he now visits his Okinawan family each year to honor his roots.  Hawaii News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bicyclists held a free expo at Ewa Elementary School to teach safe riding after recent e-bike incidents on Hawaii roads, including a head injury on Halloween and a fatal crash on Maui; organizers stressed that helmets and obeying speed rules are required by law—especially for riders under 18. Police in Ewa later issued citations for unlicensed e-bike and e-dirt bike operations—reminding riders to follow traffic laws.  Hawaii News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Kapaa Warriors won their first state title yesterday—defeating the Seabury Hall Spartans in a five-set match at Stan Sheriff Center. Head coach Paea Tafea lifted the championship trophy with her team.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors return from a bye week to face the San Jose State University Spartans for the Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy—kickoff is at 4:30 p.m. in California. The Warriors are on a three-game win streak and bowl eligible while the Spartans have won four of the last five meetings.  Hawaii News Now
  • The Iolani Raiders swept Kahuku by scores of 25 to 18, 25 to 13, and 25 to 9 in the Girls Volleyball State Championship finals yesterday at Bankoh Arena in Honolulu—senior setter Bailey Nakanelua returned from Friday’s semifinal win to lead the team.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
