COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Waikiki’s Ainahau Vista, several seniors received an incorrect notice that their rent would nearly double from $1,100 to about $2,210 on Jan 1, causing panic—management corrected the error on Nov 6, stating rents will only increase to approximately $1,200.  Hawaii News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Miwako Mulder of NOA Makaha works in her West Oahu studio crafting traditional Hawaiian feather lei that honor centuries-long heritage and have been featured on the Apple TV series Chief of War. She learned the craft from lei hulu masters and now teaches classes to pass on her kumu’s legacy — inspiring younger generations to continue this ancient art — in a small, focused community effort.  Hawaii News Now
  • After 15 days at sea, the crews of Hokulea and Hikianalia reached New Zealand ahead of schedule — they spotted land on Wednesday and made landfall Friday morning, then set a kapu state until their formal welcome on November 14. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal government shutdown has forced the cancellation of two scheduled Veterans Day ceremonies on Oahu—affecting plans to honor local veterans—even as officials consider alternative observances.  Hawaii News Now
  • The FAA ordered Honolulu and 39 other major airports to cut domestic flights by 10% starting today because of the government shutdown.  KITV
  • On November 6, the OHA Board of Trustees approved up to $6.1M in emergency relief in Hilo to support Native Hawaiians affected by the federal shutdown—this program offers up to $350 for vulnerable adults and $1,200 for furloughed federal workers. Eligible beneficiaries will apply starting November 10 through a partnership with the Hawaiian Council.  Hawaii Free Press
  • The Hawaii National Guard was activated this morning to aid statewide food distribution efforts amid a federal shutdown and legal battle over food aid benefits. Guard members helped move donations from the Kokua Food Drive and will support on-site events Sunday at Leeward Community College and Thursday at Aloha Stadium while on state active duty.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • SNAP benefits began returning to Hawaii residents after a federal judge in Rhode Island ordered full November funding. USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service completed the release on Friday—residents should contact the state Department of Human Services if funds are missing.  KITV
